This resource pack promotes literacy for EYFS and KS1 children.
It includes 8 pages of flashcards, with 6 cards on each page. Each card shows a colourful picture of hands doing different actions that children can recognise and talk about.
The actions include everyday things such as waving, counting, drinking, sticking, choosing, writing, cleaning, texting, reading and digging.
The pictures are clear and child-friendly, helping children understand what is happening and encouraging them to use simple language.
These cards support the development of speaking and listening skills. Children can look at a card and say what they can see or talk about what they like doing. For example, they might say, “I like writing” or “I like digging in the garden.” This helps build vocabulary, sentence skills and confidence.
The flashcards can be used in lots of interactive ways. A teacher or child can act out an action while others find the matching card. Children can also copy the actions from the cards or from each other. You can ask children to think of other things they can do with their hands, and also discuss things we should not do, such as hitting.
You can print, duplicate and laminate the cards to use for matching games, sorting activities or memory games. They are also useful for classroom displays and can be used to support daily routines or timetables, for example: writing, reading and painting in the morning, and playing, sticking and skipping in the afternoon.
This resource also supports early literacy by helping children learn verbs (doing words) and simple sentence writing. Children can choose a card and write a sentence about it.
The resource links literacy with Ourselves.
It is also helpful for EAL or EFL learners, as the clear pictures support understanding and encourage children to use simple spoken English.
