WHAT ARE THE 4 TGfU GAME CATEGORIES?

Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU; Bunger and Thorpe) was developed in 1982 as an alternative to the traditional “skills-based” physical education teaching model. The basic foundation of the TGfU concept states that if physical education teachers can improve their students understanding of game play, their skill performance will improve greatly. Some research has suggested that students who are taught using the TGfU model, develop a more holistic appreciation for games and are more intrinsically motivated in activities that involve decision making and tactics.

TGfU games are categorized tactically into four group- 1. TARGET, 2. NET AND WALL, 3. STRIKING AND FIELDING and 4. INVASION GAMES; which are based on how the games are played.

This colorful TGfU “Game Categories” PE poster serves as a modern visual displaying these 4 TGfU game categories in a kid friendly, easy to comprehend printable. The posters come in a Zip folder with 2 Formats- PDF and JPEG (originally set for 8 ½ by 11 sheets) but they can easily be copied on a school or store Poster-Maker to convert to a large sized poster. You can then place it inside your gym or playing area for your students to see and for you to reference while you teach your daily PE lessons.

This Physical Education Poster is designed for all PE age groups
