For each state, your students will…

1. Read a brief introduction to that state. Includes location, surrounding states, capital, flag, state bird, state flower.

2. Write the name of the capital city next to the star on the map to show the location of the capital.

3. Color the map (optional for interactive notebook activity)

4. Use the map and compass to answer questions on page 2. Use compass to practice cardinal and ordinal directions.

5. Create a 50 States of the USA Notebook! (see below).

Colored pencils and a pen or pencil are needed for this activity. No other prep needed. Basic Geography worksheets with simple maps to introduce the state and practice cardinal and ordinal directions.

For use with Interactive Notebooks: After the worksheets for a state are completed, students can cut out the map, flag, state bird and flower, and paste into the notebook under the topic of 50 States of the USA / Sub-Topic: (state). Under the map, students can write a summary in their own words of what they now know about this state. Add one state at a time until all 50 states are completed!
