Help students explain what cities offer, from employment and education to healthcare, culture and leisure, and why these opportunities are not equally accessible to everyone.

The Promise of the City explores the benefits of urban living through clear explanations, data comparisons and a family’s decision about moving. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is the main example, connecting the wider Towns and Cities unit to a real place. Background information is included, so students can focus on the geography without needing prior knowledge of the city.

What students will learn

  • The opportunities cities offer in employment, housing, services, culture, leisure and consumption.
  • How investment and employment can create further jobs through the multiplier effect.
  • How to compare urban and rural incomes using data.
  • Why businesses and services concentrate in urban areas.
  • Why higher incomes and a wider choice of services do not benefit everyone equally.
  • How to select evidence and develop an explanation of urban opportunities.

What’s included

Choose between a Full Lesson presentation for more detailed teaching and a shorter Essentials presentation focused on the core ideas.

The student workbook follows the Full Lesson presentation and comes in full colour, black and white, and an online-ready version for typed answers. The Essentials presentation has a matching booklet in student notes and completed versions, including a Knowledge Organiser.

Exam-style questions, model answers, a separate exam practice pack with a mark scheme and a short assessment are included. A full answer key supports marking and feedback. Access to the module’s interactive activities on Geography Oasis is included as a bonus.

In Sell the City, teams create and present a storyboard about urban opportunities, then revise their message to account for the barriers a family might face. A separate presentation and printable materials are supplied for the activity.
