Help students follow rainwater through a drainage basin and explain why it reaches a river by different routes.
The Drainage Basin System introduces the water cycle through inputs, stores, flows and outputs. Students connect the features of a basin with the movement of water through vegetation, soil and rock, then compare a forest with an urban surface.
Learning includes
- Distinguish the global water cycle from an open drainage basin system.
- Identify sources, tributaries, confluences, watersheds and the river mouth.
- Explain interception, infiltration, surface runoff, throughflow and groundwater flow.
- Represent a basin using a systems diagram.
- Compare how land cover and saturated soil affect water movement.
