Teach students to connect flow at a river bend with erosion, deposition and the formation of an ox-bow lake.
Meanders and Ox-bow Lakes develops the relationship between river processes and changing channel shape. Students compare the outer and inner bends, interpret a cross-section and follow the stages that turn a meander into an isolated lake.
Learning includes
- Identify river cliffs, slip-off slopes and the main features of a meander.
- Explain differences in flow and depth across a river bend.
- Relate outer-bank erosion and inner-bank deposition to meander migration.
- Sequence neck narrowing, a flood cut-off and deposition at the old loop.
- Use annotated diagrams to explain ox-bow lake formation.

Collaborative lesson
Teams create a sequence of drawings with process annotations to show a meander changing over time. A heavy-rain update asks them to show the cut-off and the later sealing of the old loop.
