Explain how repeated flooding and deposition build floodplains, natural levees and river deltas.
Floodplains, Levees and Deltas brings the lower course landforms together through the sorting and deposition of sediment. Students connect the same process with different places: water spreading across a floodplain, repeated deposits beside a bank and sediment accumulating at a river mouth.
Learning includes
- Describe floodplains, natural levees, deltas and distributaries.
- Explain how meander movement and flooding contribute to floodplain formation.
- Relate particle size and distance from the channel to deposition.
- Distinguish natural levees from artificial flood defences.
- Explain the conditions that allow a delta to form and grow.
Teaching options and resources
Choose Full Lesson for core teaching, deeper explanations, skills and a collaborative lesson, or the separate Essentials presentation for focused core content with a matching booklet.
- Student Workbook in colour, black and white and typed-answer versions.
- Complete and notes Essentials Booklets, with colour and black and white options.
- Exam practice, mark scheme and mini assessment.
- Recipe for a Delta presentation and supporting materials.
Collaborative lesson
Students write and illustrate a geographical recipe that identifies the ingredients and sequence needed to form a delta. They then adapt the same sediment-sorting idea to explain a natural levee.
