Connect the causes of river flooding with its impacts and the strengths and limits of flood management.
River Flooding on the Klang uses the December 2021 floods in Malaysia’s Klang valley, including Taman Sri Muda, as its detailed example. Students first develop the general ideas of rainfall, runoff, hydrographs and flood risk, then apply them to the event.
Learning includes
- Explain natural and human causes of river flooding.
- Read rainfall and discharge on a flood hydrograph and calculate lag time.
- Distinguish flood hazards from the vulnerability of people and places.
- Use evidence to explain social, economic and environmental impacts.
- Evaluate management measures, including the geographical limits of the SMART Tunnel.

Collaborative lesson
Students work as a news team to assemble an evidence-based account of the flood. They combine reporting, data checking, mapping and editing before explaining why a tunnel that protected central Kuala Lumpur did not prevent flooding at a downstream estate.
