LO: To identify different mountain types
Skills Starter: remind children of the 8 compass points. Have a world map. Revise previous knowledge ring of fire/tectonic plates. Ask children to use compass points which direction they are from UK.
Main Teaching: KW: Name mountain ranges and what countries and continents they are in. Define what a mountain is.
Show how mountains are formed.
Fold mountains- with a towel and push the sides of the towel together – that is the Earth’s crust and tectonic plates pushing together to create that mountain- Himalayas, Alps.
 Fault Lock Mountains – Tectonic plates rub together, causes pressure and snaps. Dried Lasagne sheets push them together until they snap – Sierra, California and Nevada
 Dome Mountains – Created by magma building inside and pushing the Earth’s crust but never breaks the crust. Blow up balloon to push something up but doesn’t break the material - British Columbia, Canada and Adirondacks, New York state
 Volcano – magma breaks the surface and lava spouts out and that creates a mountain. Hardened lava adds to its formation – Mt Etna, Ben Nevis
 Live Volcano – Polystyrene cup and cut, squeeze ketchup through hole
Plateau Mountains – They are caused by erosion, high plain, flat terrain and raised above sea level and grounds around them - Table Mountain, South Africa, Grand Canyon, Nevada. Use Dienne cubes to stack up as a mountain.
 Underwater mountain ranges –
Task: Draw a diagram of each mountain and write a small explanation.
