Year 1 One more, One less intervention

Can they tell you what comes after 39… but not what one more than 39 is?
A targeted 10-minute Year 1 intervention for children who need support understanding one more and one less, including crossing tens boundaries.

One More & One Less is part of the Piece Together 10-Minute Maths Catch-Up series. It is designed for short, focused intervention with a teacher or TA, using a baseline assessment to identify the precise gap and route the child to the right starting point.

The six sessions develop:

finding one more within 10
finding one less within 10
finding one more and one less for teen numbers
crossing 9 ↔ 10 and 19 ↔ 20
finding one more and one less to 100, including across a tens boundary
flexible reasoning with neighbouring numbers and explanation

The pack keeps the focus on the fact that the quantity changes by exactly one, even when the numeral changes noticeably at a tens boundary. Children connect counters, ten-frames, number tracks, hundred squares and tens-and-ones structure to the numerical relationship.
