A 7 week art unit for Year 6 pupils on how detail is created in drawings to make them realistic. Includes a planning document, smartboard slides (free software for this can be downloaded online) and all worksheets required.

This unit aims for children to:

  • Understand the qualities of different drawing media and evaluate their effectiveness for different tasks.
  • Know how to use techniques to show light and shade.
  • Understand proportions of faces and how to use the grid method to draw accurately.
  • Know different grades of pencils 2H, HB, B, 2B, 4B and 6B and select these for purpose.
  • Know about the work of Leonardo Da Vinci and compare these to modern artists such as Hector Gonzalez.
  • Drawing can lead to a range of jobs such as architecture, fashion designing, interior designer and illustration.

The end goal which can be used as an assessment piece is for the children to create a sketched self-portrait with accurate proportion, shape and space and well as using graphite pencil shading techniques to add light, shadow, tone and texture to their sketch.
