Bright interactive PowerPoint game. There are 5 categories (all four operations plus Roman numerals). Four questions, increasing in difficulty in each category. Pupils should be divided into mixed ability teams, and scores kept on a flipchart or whiteboard. Questions answered correctly score the number of points indicated on the home screen. Wrong answers lose that number of points. It is not possible to revisit questions.

This is a 12 slide presentation which would be useful to anyone who is unsure about what the subjunctive is and how to recognise it. This is the first of a series of short texts for teaching SPaG. I was looking for material that I could use for teaching spelling, grammar and punctuation, and which could be used at the end of the week as a dictation assessment. Unable to find anything suitable, I ended up scribbling them myself on a Monday morning. Most of the themes are directed at the class I was teaching at the time, but some teachers may relate to them. I called them The Monday Nag, for obvious reasons! The pack contains a PowerPoint presentation, and five activities. There is a spelling sheet covering the points highlighted in the text, a Cloze activity, a supported dictation worksheet for lower ability learners, a writing task, and a crossword on grammatical terms best suited for more able pupils. I would suggest working through the PowerPoint on the first session of the week and leading up to the writing task and the dictation at the end of the week, by which time children should be thoroughly familiar with both text and SPaG content.

This is one of a series of short reading passages written for Lower KS2. It is followed by a mini- comprehension task where pupils have to choose which of three statements is true . There is a SPaG exercise linked to the passage. The final activity is extended writing. The text is a bit PC - no plastic in costumes, and no traipsing around streets threatening old folk or begging for sweets!

For Upper KS2 and KS3, a text about Burns, his poetry, and his place in Scottish life. The reading comprehension comprises 15 questions, with mark allocation indicated. The question type ranges from simple retrieval to inference and interpretation of language. Mark scheme is provided.

The use of French articles is often different from English, and it is an area where even experienced students make mistakes. This set of resources addresses that, covering the definite, indefinite and partitive articles. There is a support sheet and two worksheets for each. The accompanying answers have explanatory notes referring students to the rules covered in the support sheet. Each worksheet has 8 short questions to be translated from English to French. One mark is awarded for getting the article right, and a second mark for the correctness of the whole response. Each of the sets would provide ideal independent work to follow on from an online lesson.

For KS1 and lower KS2. A seven slide (plus title and end) presentation on how commas are used for lists. Nouns, noun phrases and adjectives are covered fully, and at the end there is an indication that the same rules apply for other types of lists (verbs and adverbs, for example). Each demonstration slide is followed by a whole class 'Try this' activity, which could be done on individual whiteboards or in books. Available as either PowerPoint or PDF. This presentation was designed to enhance classroom practice of French regular verbs. The target conjugation is chosen from the drop-down menu, the ‘allons-y’ button generates a new verb and a button is clicked to spin the subject selector. Pupils then write down (on white boards preferably) the form of the verb that matches the subject. Teaching points or answers can be typed on the on-screen board. Work can be saved at the end if desired. Any tense can be practised with this activity. The conjugations available via the drop down menu are -er verbs, -ir verbs, -re verbs, and -er verbs involving spelling changes. In order for the interactive features to work, you will need to enable macros on your computer when prompted.

These four texts are retellings in modern English of traditional Chinese folk tales. One - the story of the Nian - is specifically about the origins of Chinese New Year traditions. The other three could be used at any time of the year. These have several common themes (money, religion, magic, kindness, and more which could be suggested by pupils themselves), and would make a good starting point for textual comparison or cross-curricular work (eg RE, citizenship). The texts all come with a set of 10 questions which could be used for discussion in assembly, or for formal written comprehension in the classroom. The folk tale format makes the texts accessible to a wide age range, including KS1, whereas the themes broached in many of the questions make them more suitable for able KS2 or KS3 classes.

For upper KS2. Two pdf files to support the teaching of sentence punctuation, and particularly the problem of run-on sentences and comma splices. A help sheet that can either be distributed to pupils or used as classroom display, plus a worksheet with answers.

This resource provides sufficient material for a complete lesson on equivalent fractions, and enough worksheets for classwork, homework and revision purposes. It consists of a 17-slide PowerPoint presentation, 5 graded sets of worksheets, and a two-page help document to support learners/parents/support staff in the independent/homework tasks. The presentation has teacher-controlled animation to facilitate step-by-step working through of the method. After two slides dealing with key vocabulary, there are 5 showing how to use multiplication to find a second missing numerator, and a further 5 showing how to use division to find the first numerator. The intention is that during the whole-class lesson, the method will become embedded in learners’ memories as they work through a series of problems with the teacher, using the same ‘script’ for each. At the end of the presentation, there is a set of calculations for pupils to work on in pairs/small groups, before moving on to independent work. Answers are supplied. The step-by-step help sheets have a similar function to the presentation. The first shows how multiplication is used to solve equivalent fractions problems. The second deals with the division method. The 25 worksheets (sets of 5 with accompanying answer sheets) are arranged in folders, which are numbered in order of difficulty. Since the objective is to teach a method, rather than supply calculation practice, a secure knowledge of multiplication tables is not a prerequisite of success at this level. The easiest folder requires only that pupils know the 10 times table. The other folders also have denominators of 2 and 5.

For upper KS2 and KS3. A sheet with 10 straightforward sentences for grammatical analysis. Each word has to be written in the appropriate column in an accompanying Parts of Speech grid. The first one is provided as an example. Brief teacher notes are provided on the difference between possessive pronouns and possessive adjectives, as well as the use of more difficult adverbs.

KS2 Worksheets and help sheet. 5 worksheets with answers. Task is to list factors of 2 numbers, and then to identify the greatest (or highest) common factor. There are 10 questions on each worksheet.

The poem about Henry King, who died from chewing string, is the text. Also included in the PDF are a poem analysis sheet and a jigsaw exercise to help with the learning of the text. Probably best for KS2, and would make a good lesson as part of a comic poetry unit of work.
