Stimulate discussion and investigate the appropriateness of averages with this presentation, from flibit
What is it?
Averages are a staple of mathematics education. However, even for the most experienced of teachers, it can be a constant challenge to find engaging ways to tackle them with your class.
Thankfully, this presentation offers a solution. Confronted with a series of scenarios, students are tasked with considering which average is most appropriate to use. The nature of the questions enables learners to get to grips with mean, median and mode in the context of everyday life, helping to break down a complicated (and often abstract) topic.
How can it be used?
Complete with a starter activity, this clearly structured presentation works perfectly as a lesson. However, before using it, I’d suggest adapting the slides to suit the needs of your students.
Why not encourage pupils to discuss the questions as a group? With plenty of real-life examples to dissect, there are few better ways to cement students’ understanding of averages.
