Very clear and easy to use. Sensible start point and progression builds up through questions.

Not used yet will come back and review once used but thanks for posting
I have included two versions of this worksheet, one with smileys and one using some awful pictures of myself that will make the kids laugh! This aimed at lower ability students and offers a way of using a number line to add and subtract numbers.

Absolutely what I was looking for- tutees who understand covered topics but make silly mistakes because of poor understanding of directed numbers!!

Algebra - representing, sequences, simplifying expressions
Key Stages: 3 and 4 ★★
What patterns do you notice when you enter a number into the bottom left hand corner of the pyramid? Can you explain your patterns?
This problem offers students the opportunity to notice patterns, make conjectures, explain what they notice and prove their conjectures. Generalisation provokes the need to use algebraic techniques such as collecting like terms and representing number sequences algebraically.
This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.
The file attached is a HTML file, which, when opened, automatically redirects you to the problem on the NRICH website.Reviews

Great starter activity especially like the question ideas above
Practice questions, homeworks and assessments
Two lame jokes from yours truly whose punchlines are unveiled upon answering the negative numbers questions. Number 1 is simple adding and subtracting, number 2 is multiplying and dividing (including Bidmas).

Excellent, thank you
This is a rich Venn Diagram activity on operations with negative numbers.
To access all the Venn Diagram activities in this collection, as well as teaching notes, please visit: http://www.mrbartonmaths.com/venn.htm
Here is why I love Venn Diagram activities so much:
1) Students can always make a start. If they can think of a number/expression/object or whatever it might be, it has to go in one of the regions on the diagram, so they are up and running
2) The more regions student find, the more challenging the task gets, which adds a nice element of differentiation
3) They are incredibly versatile, and can be used for almost all maths topics for all ages and abilities
4) They are easy to tweak by simply changing one of the circle labels if you find they are too difficult/easy
5) Students can create their own as an extension task
I hope you and your students enjoy them.

I'm a sucker for a Venn diagram at the best of times. But a task which challenges students with the four operations with negative numbers and gets them testing their own ideas? What more can you ask for?!
