This is a resource I created in response to very anxious learners. Seeing the passing of time and making it rich with reward can calm children. This intervention used over a period of time (lengthening the work times slowly and in response to the child/children) can get them to working independently. I have used this with whole classes, small groups and individuals

Partner Class reflection sheet

Partner Class reflection sheet

Based on the idea that children are not 'naughty' but expressing an unmet need, this reflection sheet has been created for children to think about their behaviour and needs. It helps children simply structure their thoughts and feelings and communicate their needs to the teacher which has resulted in significant changes in behaviour.

Reflection sheet for behaviour change

Reflection sheet for behaviour change

I developed this resource as a way of a grown up reflecting with a young person about any unsafe behaviours they had been involved in. The ideas are based on the idea that children do not 'misbehave' rather they are developing emotionally and as such need to be given skills on how to do things differently. Via reflection, children have a chance to think about their feelings and how they result in actions/reactions and the impact of their behaviour on others. It also gives the opportunity to learn how to repair any relationships that have been broken. It gives the adult the chance to assess for emotional literacy, ability to empathise and allows for teaching points. The whole process takes just 10 minutes and the impact has been substantial in changing behaviour.

Fantastic Mr Fox - The Very Clever Mr Fox!

Fantastic Mr Fox - The Very Clever Mr Fox!

This fun and informative helps students to gain a deeper understanding of the main character in Roald Dahl’s ‘Fantastic Mr Fox:’ Mr Fox himself! Students use their skills of inference and deduction in order to establish key information about Mr Fox’s character, likes, dislikes, and mannerisms. They then create a character profile using the information that they have gathered! The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through: -Considering how Roald Dahl was influenced by real-life foxes in his characterisation; - Reading and understanding extracts from the opening of Fantastic Mr Fox, in which Mr Fox's character traits are revealed; - Inferring and deducing key features about Mr Fox from across the text; - Creating a character profile for Mr Fox, utilising knowledge that they have gathered from over the course of the lesson; - Self assessing their own learning attempts. Included is: - Whole lesson PowerPoint - colourful and comprehensive; - Text Detectives Worksheet (and answer sheet); - Selected extracts - Fantastic Mr Fox; - Character Profile Template (Word and PDF); - Comprehensive lesson plan. There are also opportunities for group learning, speaking and listening, peer assessment, and whole class discussion. I originally used these resources with a mixed-ability year 3 class, however colleagues have used them for between years 1 and 8 with some adaptations.
