Plotting coordinates using up to four quadrants!

I have created this for a year 5 top set maths group. It is differentiated 3 ways, yellow being the less able, green able and pink more able. This links in very heavily with shape as I am teaching this following 3 weeks on shape, space and measure, so it will continue to embed their knowledge of quadrilaterals, types of triangles, angles and parallel and perpendicular lines. Hope this is useful! Have included photos of what it should look like once points have been plotted, hopefully I haven't made any silly mistakes! :-)

Pentomino puzzles activity

Investigation and problem solving activity in which students identify all the different pentominoes, then fit them into shapes (50 different shapes, inc. 4 rectangles, 4 squares, 17 animals, 13 pictures (inc. car, train, plane, rocket, boat), 12 other shapes (inc. cross, yin and yang, heart)).

Angles in a Polygon Revision lesson

Writing in Math--Geometry--Two Truths and a Lie

A unique way to get students writing in math. This has 21 pages with 21 graphics related to triangle properties, area of polygons, and volume of rectangular prisms. Having students write in mathematics can be difficult. Get students up and moving around the room while they are engaged in writing in math with this activity. Students will write two truths and one lie (adapted from the get to know you game) about the graphics. Teacher Instructions included. There are two versions.In the first versions, each group of students will get a graphic or word problems and write two truths and one lie about it. Afterwards, students will get sticky notes to identify the lies on other groups papers. In a second version of this, the truths and the lies are already written and students need to identify which of the three statements is the lie. This can be used as a review at the end of the lesson. You could use all the pages at once or break it up by unit. There are potentially three days of activities here: triangle properties, area of polygons, and volume of rectangular prisms.

This is a fun, engaging and creative lesson with shape. The lesson has been successfully used to apply knowledge of shapes in a year 2 setting. Children can begin to think of problems systematically. They think of the best way to start, that there is more than one answer, that they can use number doubles and counting on to support them. Children are encouraged to find different ways to make a 9 sided shape family. They need to be secure with properties of simple 2d shapes previously such as sides of regular shapes. This activity can also be used in year 1 with children working in greater depth to demonstrate reasoning with shape in the measures unit. Work can be differentiated by giving children regular or irregular shapes. Very stimulating activity for all learners.

2d properties of shapes and sorting shapes

Suitable for KS1 primary Year 1 and Year 2 Mathematics New Curriculum - understanding properties of shape.
