This is a quiz I devised to use with pupils on the last lesson of term. The answers for each round are included after the round. There are 10 questions per round. The music clips for the music round are provided via hyperlink. For the music round, two points should be awarded for each clip; 1 point for a correct artist, 1 point for a correct song title. I used the template from a free resource on here which had the same rounds but for 2012.

In Luke Nguyen’s Vietnam, the popular chef explores the country of his heritage, cooking up an abundance of dishes from this much-loved cuisine. In this episode, Luke explores the food and culture of Hue, home to the ruling Emperors of the 17th century in central Vietnam. The recipes prepared In this episode are available on the SBS website. A free resource (handout) designed to prompt students to deconstruct the IA3 example and identify how the layout, the content and writing style work simultaneously to produce a high-quality response to the task. The handout features: questions about the number of primary vs secondary sources, approximate word counts for different sections, questions about how the intro was structured and what the hypothesis was, questions about specific vocabulary choices made by the writer in their responses (including conjunctions) & questions which prompt the students to read the information provided by the QCAA in the margin notes about how best to address particular criteria. The handout also includes information about how to reference particular source types in APA formatting. This handout is intended to be used alongside the QCAA sample IA3 response written in October 2018 NB: This is about a different topic (The Cold War) so as to avoid student over-reliance on the exemplar. A PowerPoint and Trivia sheet for students to fill in. I placed students into groups of 2 to 3. Each round had 10 questions worth one point each. Answers are provided on the slide directly following each round. The first two rounds were general questions about History. In the third round students had to watch three clips from the CBS television series Cold Case and respond to questions about them. Round 4 was a match the definitions round (of historical terms and concepts they had learned thus far in the unit). The final round focused on recalling the parts of T.A.D.P.O.L.E (an acronym for evaluating the reliability of sources).

I created this booklet to assess 10 history students conducting a historical inquiry into World War Two (they had a choice of four topics). This was delivered in a school where each student had a laptop so was designed to be completed electronically however, more room to write could be added if you want to use it as a hard copy booklet. Two retrieval charts which I place onto a class one note for students to complete in pairs. This is designed to be used at the beginning of the unit to first engage with the perspectives of the colonists and the Indigenous Australians. I have also included a PowerPoint which explains how to sign up to view the State Library of Queensland’s resources.

I have taken a modelled response for a Frontier Wars short response exam and turned it into a practice exam. The task sheet includes a little more scaffolding than the actual task as it is to build student’s literacy (it includes some Logon literacy linking word suggestions.) Also included is the stimulus sources, a GTMJ (guide to making judgements) and example answers to go through after the exam.

This free lesson was designed to help prepare students for their short response exam. It begins with a list of ‘features of evidence’ that students need to refer to when analysing sources. It includes some feedback based on common errors found in the practice exam. It provides a list of tricky vocabulary which was taken directly from the exam sources so that students can familiarise themselves with the definitions for homework. This is followed by a YouTube video about the 9 best studying tips. This is followed by a review of the historical concepts of perspective and empathy. There is a Frontier War scenario told from two perspectives for the students to read and respond two. This transitions to looking at perspectives in poems about historical events using Charge of the Light Brigade as an example (as the tactical errors at Battle Mountain have been compared to this poem).

A free lesson on using signposting in your writing. A definition of signposting is provided along with the two ways to achieve this. Some hints for signposting in an introduction and signposting in a body paragraph are provided. Just a quick lesson which can be used as a warm up before tackling unit-specific content.

This unit allows students to demonstrate planning, evaluation and inquiry by investigating the role technology, in particular the internet and social media, plays in their own life. They will explore the advantages and challenges associated with changing technology and how they can be safe when using it. Students will evaluate and analyse how science and technology has advanced the way we interact and improve our way of living. Students will learn how science and technology can help out society in the 21st Century. They will also learn the effects that science and technology have on society.

A glimpse into history! This source can be used to explore what Queensland students were learning about the First World War as it was occurring. This monograph begins with a poem entitled ‘Gaba Tepe’ by Dr J. Laurence Renioul. (Gaba Tepe, is a headland overlooking the northern Aegean Sea in what is now the Gallipoli Peninsula National Historical Park). The next section is entitled ‘Remember Anzac.’ A year had elapsed since the first ‘School Paper’ about the Anzacs. The article speaks about why the Anzacs should not be forgotten by Australians. It includes quotes from the writing of Australian poet Henry Lawson. This article also includes new information about the experiences of those landing on Gallipoli (including recollections of returning soldiers). It includes artwork depicting men throwing bombs over their trench walls and photographs of the doctors and nurses captioned ‘heroes of the Dardanelles.’ The next section is entitled ‘Anzac day’ which is about the first commemoration of 25th April 1915 Australian troops landed on Gallipoli in Turkey. In Queensland Anzac Day 1916 was organised by the influential Anzac Day Commemoration Committee. They ensured the day revolved entirely around commemoration. The article speaks about the need to provide national protection for the graves of WW1 soldiers as well as “tender care for their living dependants; local honour boards and rolls; national monuments” and a war museum to house “appropriate souvenirs and historic records.” Information is provided about the progress of the war and how the war has blurred boundaries between countries as they have had to work together. There is a poem called ‘Knitting’ by Ella Wheeler Wilcox which reveals the women on the home front’s contribution to the war. This is followed by a section called ‘The Good Samaritan of the Dardanelles (information about Private William Simpson and his Donkey). Next is a section entitled ‘The Australians in France’ taken from London’s Daily Mail. The next section ‘Reville – Carry on!’ about the buglers and the songs they played including ‘Reville,’ the ‘Last Post and the ‘Tattoo.’ It concludes with reflections of how we should think of the war in the years to come and how we should care for our returning soldiers. The locality is named after Violet’s parents who emigrated from Halesowen, Worcestershire, England, in 1866 and settled in the area.

This free lesson was designed to remind students about the requirements of historical essays in preparation for drafting their assessment. It looks at the QCAA’s exemplar essay about the end of the Cold War. It goes through the instrument specific marking guide and what must be done to get top marks for each criteria. Students are then given a handout (included for free in my shop at this link) designed to prompt students to deconstruct the IA3 example from QCAA. After students are given time to work through this independently or in groups, there is a whole class discussion of the answers (allowing teacher to point out what makes the essay a high quality example). This is followed by some advice from historyskills.com about how to write an apt introduction with a recommended structure – B.H.E.S. This is followed by the T.E.E.A.S.C. Structure which they recommend for body paragraphs (as an alternative to TEEL). Finally, we look at recommendations made for writing powerful concluding paragraphs.
