A lesson looking at the intro preface to A Christmas Carol - Middle Ability Year 10 lesson. Includes scaffolded worksheets to study the preface and introduce language analysis skill

Lesson 9 of a scheme of learning about Animal Farm for new AQA. Low ability year 9. In this lesson, students used a scaffolded and differentiated sheet to analyse Squealer's speech, and they then completed a 20 minute writing assessment answering the question: How does Squealer uses propaganda in chapter 3 and how is this similar to Russian propaganda? Peer assessment at the end. This was an observed lesson graded outstanding.

A task to get students to think about register they would use for different audiences and purposes. In pairs or individually, give each student a card with a technique, picture and scenario, and get them to write an example. Then, get students to mark each other's and give improvement. If time, get students to have another go with other cards and work on their green pen target.

Here are 2 support sheets for writing a comparison essay between London and Checking Out Me History. Used with bottom set year 10. The Hap sheet is designed to walk students through how to write a sophisticated essay - using advice given in my AQA examiner training. The LAP sheet is similar, but has a writing frame for more support. It covers the theme of anger - so a comparison of how both poets explore restriction; response to anger in both; one paragraph on structure. A lesson I used to help year 10 explore and analyse the development of Gerald in Act 2. I had previously done an initial impressions of him in Act 1 which this developed from. That sheet is also attached to this.

This is the second lesson in a scheme for Animal Farm for new 9-1 AQA. Class is very weak - I try to teach the context alongside the novel so that the students can make clear links due to being very low ability.

LA Y9 - part of a series in a scheme. Spent first half of the lesson finishing off reading chapter 3 with lots of directed questioning. They had to see if they could spot any propaganda techniques learnt in previous lesson, and anywhere where they could see potential foreshadowing. they then looked closely at the speech by squealer - differentiated - to look for specific propaganda techniques. they then looked in more detail using the grid.

A lesson based on getting year 7 to practise their creative writing skills by recapping what they know to include and giving it a go using stimuli from well known clips (frozen; up) etc designed to engage.
