Edexcel GCSE Mathematics Grade C/D Revision

This is a set of lessons based around the 'Edexcel GCSE Mathematics A Linear Higher student book'. You do really need the book! This allows students to explore key words in each chapter - looking at challenge, definisitions and connections. Then students progress to the Big6 challenges which are 6 key areas/skills that must understand. Students should also explain their thinking behind solutions and answers. Every set of three lessons is followed by a mini-assessment.

Mathematics of Coordinates II - L4 Maps

Mathematics of Coordinates II - L4 Maps This is a cross-curricular lesson looking at finding and mapping 4-figure grid references. It is highly active and fun-based turning your classroom into a hunt for treasure. View the resource for full instructions. There is room for some extension work to look at L5 6-figure grid references and all activities are supported by my Numeracy Cards. Please leave comments and let me know how it goes. Mathematics of Words VI - Making algebraic Formula

This lesson follows on from the previous one (V) and gets students to put together formula for the perimeters and areas of squares, rectangles and triangles. These are set as a problem-based learning tasks for froup arrpoaches and there is then some extension tasks using the construction cubes. Lots of opportunities for discussions and exploring students thinking. Introduces the idea of proofs as well. Lesson works well for L5+ though could be higher depending on shapes used. There is also an assessment from Kangaroo maths attached. Follow me on twitter @boostprogress

Mathematics of Words V - Speed Formulae

This level 5+ resource can be delivered in maths or science and should take two to three hours to deliver. Ideally the speed section should be combined with some simple practical activity around falling objects (terminal speed) or cars down a slope. The worksheet is also useful for extension. There is an extension section at the end for L6 students to construct formula. Follow me on twitter for updates on latest resources: https://twitter.com/boostprogress

Mathematics of Coordinates I - L4 First Quadrant

(0)
A first lesson for L4 pupils, possibly even L3+ students, beginning with key terms, comparison of photographs of graphs drawn by three pairs of pupils and then pupils drawing their own first quadrant. Pupils then identify coordinates from the first quadrant and points find points along lines in the first quadrant and an unknown shape. Resource finishes with a game for pupils and they may design their own version as well. Many opportunities for group approaches. As always follow me on twitter @boostprogress and provide feedback comments.

A series of activities for teaching L5+ pupils about Improper Fractions. There is nice progression in the activities for use with lesson observations and worded problems to address literacy requirements. As always please leave feedback and comments and follow @boostprogress.

Mathematics of Coordinates I - L5 Four Quadrants

Sequences, functions and graphs lessons: for getting students to find corodinates in all four quadrants, find missing corodinates and to investigate lines parallel to the x-axis and y-axis. Nice game=based starter and plenary. This includes resources that can be printed out for group tasks and some opportunities for literacy. A lesson to cover the expansion of brackets for L4+ students looking at + x + and + x - only. There the basic lesson outline for you to enrich with questioning and other resources. If you have any ways of improving this resource then please email me. You can also follow me on twitter @boostprogress

Skills for Science

This is one of our "Skills for Science" which supports 11-16 year olds with the development of softer skills of How Science Works. They are all focused around practical tasks and then focus on a area, such as planning experiments, experimental safety, data collection and mathematical analysis and evaluation. They are ideal for the new GCSE Science specifications in the UK and more general aspects of wider science education in the USA. All are high quality and well supported with images and relevant contexts.

Mathematics of Words I - Algebraic Expressions

This is a lesson ained at Level 4+ students where students use scrabble tiles (cards) to become familiar with numerical values of letters and begin to work with expressions. Blooms sets the cognitive demands of the scrabble activity. Highly kinesthetic and helps early understanding. Later slides also cover solving simple expressions (using cards) and there are some extension questions from CIMT at the end. A lesson plan will follow but please suggest some activities in the comments that have worked with this resource. Follow me on twitter @boostprogress

Mathematics of Word IV - Expanding Brackets L5+

A resource for L5+ or grade C pupils. Requires Maths Watch videos. There is a linked lesson at L4+ in my resources if this is too demanding. Once again the basis for a lesson and does not contain the lesson plan or rich questioning resources. It should also be followed with some worded problems and contextual examples which I may add soon? Please add any suggestions to comments for improvements. Mathematics of Measures I - Units and Lengths L4+

A couple of lessons introducing metric and imperial measures and their symbols. It then moves onto estimating and measuring lengths, before finishing with conversions between different measures of length (L5). Borrow fromthe scientists a set of 1m rulers to add a kinesthetic aspect to the measuring. You may even set a mini-competition for most accurate estimates. As always follow me @boostprogress and leave feedback and comments.

Graphology of Independent Variables

A great lesson for L4 - L7 or GCSE students in mathematics of science. The practical component can be done outside of a lab as well, as long as water is available. The focus is to explore types of independent variables and link them to appropriate graphing techniques. There are lots of opportunities to take the lesson in your own bespoke direction and I will shortly add a few more resources. If you are a mathematician then seek a scientist to get you started on this great cross-curricular opportunity! Of course any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. A couple of lessons looking at finding fractions of integers (whole numbers) including both multiplication and division. Based a little around 10 ticks but some good activities for building progress and a range of worded problems to support literacy. The basis for a solid L5+ lesson and as always leave feedback and follow @boostprogress.
