Mathematics of Fractions - L5+ Whole Integers

(0)
A couple of lessons looking at finding fractions of integers (whole numbers) including both multiplication and division. Based a little around 10 ticks but some good activities for building progress and a range of worded problems to support literacy. The basis for a solid L5+ lesson and as always leave feedback and follow @boostprogress.
Graphology of line graphs - L5+

Graphology of line graphs - L5+

A fun approach to collecting data using simple paper helicopters and cutting propellors to different lengths. Students are introduced to accurate measurement and there are options for pooling class results and investigating reliability. Then progress to graphing data using scatter graphs and possibly constructing a coversion graph relating the two variables. Ideal for the L5+ student and the disengaged mathematician or scientist! As always the activities are an outline for you to enrich. Please leave comments and feedback to further improve this resource.

A fun starter to proportions using M&M sweets. Supply students with bags of 20 MéMs with 10 of one colour, 5 of another colour, 4 of another colour and 1 of a final colour. There is a worksheet to support this and a couple of activities with cubes and cards. Great fun so give it a go. Photos soon to follow and support these lessons. Please feedback comments and follow @boostprogress.

A series of activities for teaching L5+ pupils about Improper Fractions. There is nice progression in the activities for use with lesson observations and worded problems to address literacy requirements. As always please leave feedback and comments and follow @boostprogress.
Mathematics of Coordinates I - L4 First Quadrant

Mathematics of Coordinates I - L4 First Quadrant

(0)
A first lesson for L4 pupils, possibly even L3+ students, beginning with key terms, comparison of photographs of graphs drawn by three pairs of pupils and then pupils drawing their own first quadrant. Pupils then identify coordinates from the first quadrant and points find points along lines in the first quadrant and an unknown shape. Resource finishes with a game for pupils and they may design their own version as well. Many opportunities for group approaches. As always follow me on twitter @boostprogress and provide feedback comments.
Mathematics of Symmetry I - L4+

Mathematics of Symmetry I - L4+

One or two lessons on reflective symmetry covering a range of 2D shapes, including letters, flags and road signs, Progresses to some higher L4 and low L5 tasks on lines of symmetry. As always follow me @boostprogress and leave feedback on the resource.

Mathematics of Words V - Speed Formulae

Mathematics of Words V - Speed Formulae

(0)
This level 5+ resource can be delivered in maths or science and should take two to three hours to deliver. Ideally the speed section should be combined with some simple practical activity around falling objects (terminal speed) or cars down a slope. The worksheet is also useful for extension. There is an extension section at the end for L6 students to construct formula. Follow me on twitter for updates on latest resources: https://twitter.com/boostprogress

Mathematics of Words VI - Making algebraic Formula

This lesson follows on from the previous one (V) and gets students to put together formula for the perimeters and areas of squares, rectangles and triangles. These are set as a problem-based learning tasks for froup arrpoaches and there is then some extension tasks using the construction cubes. Lots of opportunities for discussions and exploring students thinking. Introduces the idea of proofs as well. Lesson works well for L5+ though could be higher depending on shapes used. There is also an assessment from Kangaroo maths attached. Follow me on twitter @boostprogress

Mathematics of Coordinates II - L4 Maps

Mathematics of Coordinates II - L4 Maps This is a cross-curricular lesson looking at finding and mapping 4-figure grid references. It is highly active and fun-based turning your classroom into a hunt for treasure. View the resource for full instructions. There is room for some extension work to look at L5 6-figure grid references and all activities are supported by my Numeracy Cards. Please leave comments and let me know how it goes. Edexcel GCSE Mathematics Grade C/D Revision

This is a set of lessons based around the 'Edexcel GCSE Mathematics A Linear Higher student book'. You do really need the book! This allows students to explore key words in each chapter - looking at challenge, definisitions and connections. Then students progress to the Big6 challenges which are 6 key areas/skills that must understand. Students should also explain their thinking behind solutions and answers. Every set of three lessons is followed by a mini-assessment.
Mathematics of Cubes and Cuboids
BoostProgressBoostProgress

Mathematics of Cubes and Cuboids

(0)
This is the stem of one or two lessons for L4+students exploring 3D cubes and cuboids. There are opportunities for investigations and questions from these activities, and even a potential science link to surface area of biological structures. L5+ students could certainly build the cuboid skyscrapers and graph relationship between cubes used and total faces, or even use it for number patterns. The cubes also support cubed numbers or cubic volume work really well to visualise and work out the cubes of numbers 1 to 4.

Graphology of bar charts - L4+

A fantastic activity for maths or science focused around making simple paper helicopters and collecting data on how quickly they fall. This lesson was observed by OFSTED on the last lesson of a two day inspection with a lower-ability math group and achieved a 2 judgement. You can extend the activity to add stretch and challenge. Still suitable for L4 - L6 applications or a fun method of GCSE teaching or revision. As always follow on @Boostprogress and leave feedback.

Mathematics of Words II - Simplification

The second lesson now looking at simplification of expressions using single, double and mixed expressions. Plenty of diffentiation for progression in pupil questions. Appropriate for L4+ students and can be supported by scrabble-based card sort. Please provide any suggestions and remember this is only the basic lesson outline and does not include rich questioning or pupil analysis of the cognitive challenge of individual expressions. A series of resources for building two or three lessons around negative numbers and the addition and subtraction of negative numbers. There are also some useful plus and minus cards to support L3 and L4 pupils with a kinesthetic approach. The video links also offer some useful links to science and temperature measurement, Please let me have feedback.

Mathematics of Coordinates III - L4 Four Quadrants This lesson covers work in four quadrants and progresses onto equations of simple lines. There is also an online game which is a good pleanry or engager. At the end there is some access to higher work understanding the calculation of linear functions. Lots of opportunities for looking at key terms and describing patterns. The powerpoint is just the basis for activities. As always provide feedback and comments and follow me @boostprogress.
