Graphology of line graphs - L5+

(0)
A fun approach to collecting data using simple paper helicopters and cutting propellors to different lengths. Students are introduced to accurate measurement and there are options for pooling class results and investigating reliability. Then progress to graphing data using scatter graphs and possibly constructing a coversion graph relating the two variables. Ideal for the L5+ student and the disengaged mathematician or scientist! As always the activities are an outline for you to enrich. Please leave comments and feedback to further improve this resource.

A fun starter to proportions using M&M sweets. Supply students with bags of 20 MéMs with 10 of one colour, 5 of another colour, 4 of another colour and 1 of a final colour. There is a worksheet to support this and a couple of activities with cubes and cards. Great fun so give it a go. Photos soon to follow and support these lessons. Please feedback comments and follow @boostprogress.

Maths of the 2010 World Cup

As a warm-up to this summer's festivities I have put together a simple lesson for students to analyse the scores from the 2010 world cup. The table in EXCEL could also be modified for a spreadsheet or formula activity. Ideal for practicing tally&'s and progressing to more detailed analysis of mean, mode and comparing performance against ranking. Lots of possibilities and I will probably add to this resource as the lessons develop. As always leave feedback and follow at #CE4ET and #boostprogress.

Science of Solids, Liquids and Gasses II - Felix

This lesson follows on from 'The Egg' for teaching solids, liquids and gases in a contextual way.\n\nThe focus is Felix Baungatners(?) high altitude heroics (?) and the idea of his suit and capsule being a 'man-made&' egg. The lesson covers covers L3 to L6 and good progress is possible by looking back across both lessons and redrafting written explanations.\n\nBasic lesson attached as usual and please suggest improvements or additions. Mathematics of Disease

You need a maths brain and knowledge of the 'disease spreading' practical. Needs a risk assessment doing. However, great fun to bring maths to life in this interesting context. Students spread a disease and then analyse the spread. Follow me on twitter for updates on latest resources: https://twitter.com/boostprogress

KS2,3 or 4 Biology of Variation 3 - Vertebrates

(0)
A lesson resource for covering the classification of Vertebrates. Some nice activities around the X-ray machine and constructing keys. Ideally this lesson needs a few real skulls and skeletons to get it livened up. If you have none then try the local University or Museum. As always leave feedback and follow @CE4ET and @boostprogress.

GCSE Core Science - Biology: Microbes and Disease - Lesson 3 - Defences inside the body. This lessons covers the role of white cells. The outcomes and resources are differentiated and pitched at GCSE students targeting a 'C' grade at the end of their course. This lesson covers the three ways white cells fight infection, supported by video links and this can be completed through an extended writing task - supported by a key words' Wordle. If you have any suggestions to improve this resource please let me know. The Battling Bacteria resource is my own creation.

Biology of Extracting DNA from Kiwi Fruit

(1)
All the PPT's and resources for this fantastic practical lesson. Allows students to obtain the fine DNA threads from kiwi using mostly safe and available chemicals. Adds richness and interest to the theory-heavy content of the genetics units in KS3 and KS4. Tried and tested so I know it works. Please also ensure you do your own risk assessment. As always follow @boostprogress and @CE4ET.

This is the fourth lesson on the GCE A-level Biology series on 'Inheritance' and as the title suggested covers Dihybrid and Epistatic crosses. Tasks are differentiated at A, C and E standards. All the familiar examples are covered including Mendelian pea characteristics and coat colour. If there are suggestions or amendments to improve this resource then please let me know.

Science of Acids and Alkalis - L4+

(0)
A series of PPTs that support an introduction to acids and alkalies for KS3. There are a couple of well described practicals testing pH of solutions, simple neutralization and the indigestion tablet practical. There is also a short assessment to finish off the topic at L4+ and L5+. All objectives leveled and linked to SOLO taxonomy. As always follow @boostprogress or @CE4ET and leave feedback.
Numeracy cards
BoostProgressBoostProgress

Numeracy cards

(0)
A cross-curricular numeracy resource. Each card is identified by science, geography or technology as an area of pupil weakness - specifically linked to numeracy/mathematical skills. These cards may be used for information by teachers, displayed in classrooms or pupil exercise books as a learning resource. I am hoping to encourage other teachers to produce a few more and email them back to me. The cards are also part of a whole-school numeracy action plan and the full set of KS3 and 4 will contain 80 cards - plus any emailed to the collection.

Mathematics of Coordinates I - L5 Four Quadrants

Sequences, functions and graphs lessons: for getting students to find corodinates in all four quadrants, find missing corodinates and to investigate lines parallel to the x-axis and y-axis. Nice game=based starter and plenary. This includes resources that can be printed out for group tasks and some opportunities for literacy. Mathematics of Words I - Algebraic Expressions

This is a lesson ained at Level 4+ students where students use scrabble tiles (cards) to become familiar with numerical values of letters and begin to work with expressions. Blooms sets the cognitive demands of the scrabble activity. Highly kinesthetic and helps early understanding. Later slides also cover solving simple expressions (using cards) and there are some extension questions from CIMT at the end. A lesson plan will follow but please suggest some activities in the comments that have worked with this resource. Follow me on twitter @boostprogress

Mathematics of Measures I - Units and Lengths L4+

A couple of lessons introducing metric and imperial measures and their symbols. It then moves onto estimating and measuring lengths, before finishing with conversions between different measures of length (L5). Borrow fromthe scientists a set of 1m rulers to add a kinesthetic aspect to the measuring. You may even set a mini-competition for most accurate estimates. As always follow me @boostprogress and leave feedback and comments.
