Skills for Science

This is one of our "Skills for Science" which supports 11-16 year olds with the development of softer skills of How Science Works. They are all focused around practical tasks and then focus on a area, such as planning experiments, experimental safety, data collection and mathematical analysis and evaluation. They are ideal for the new GCSE Science specifications in the UK and more general aspects of wider science education in the USA. All are high quality and well supported with images and relevant contexts.

GCSE Resistant Materials revision maps

These four pages of excellent revision materials have been produced with the help of an A* student and focused on key aspects of the GCSE Resistant Material specification. There are four pages in all and they really helped my students with their revision for the examinations. The resources were mainly for AQA specification but cover many features from other specifications.

Separation Techniques - Aliens Blood

A series of 2 or 3 lessons that address separation techniques: filtration and paper chromatography. The filtration uses a mixture of sand, iron filings and water and for chromatography you need filter paper chromatography strip and a suitable colors of felt tip or highlighters. There are frames provided for students to record their learning on and a second copy for teachers to complete for peer-assessment. The lesson is ideal for learners between 8-14 years of age in science or classroom settings. Please also complete your own risk assessment, specifically around the solvent for chromatography: in my practical I used ethanol as it dissolves pigments in pens. Alternatively, you could try water for water-soluble pens and inks, if necessary. All images are obtained using creative commons licence or my own images.

This resource captures all the key knowledge for learners between 11 - 16 years of age. There are charts for students to complete and charts for teachers to complete for peer-assessment. There are plenty of links to further research and a range of contextual exercises for students. All images used were from creative commons

Blooms Learning Task Hierarchy

Have you ever thought about the cognitive demand of learning tasks? I had a go at putting common tasks into Bloom's taxonomy. This is useful for differentiating tasks within a lesson and across lessons. Please as always let me have feedback on improving this resource.
Mathematics of Cubes and Cuboids

Mathematics of Cubes and Cuboids

This is the stem of one or two lessons for L4+students exploring 3D cubes and cuboids. There are opportunities for investigations and questions from these activities, and even a potential science link to surface area of biological structures. L5+ students could certainly build the cuboid skyscrapers and graph relationship between cubes used and total faces, or even use it for number patterns. The cubes also support cubed numbers or cubic volume work really well to visualise and work out the cubes of numbers 1 to 4.
Mathematics of Negative Numbers

Mathematics of Negative Numbers

A series of resources for building two or three lessons around negative numbers and the addition and subtraction of negative numbers. There are also some useful plus and minus cards to support L3 and L4 pupils with a kinesthetic approach. The video links also offer some useful links to science and temperature measurement, Please let me have feedback.

Mathematics of Coordinates II - L4 Maps

Mathematics of Coordinates II - L4 Maps This is a cross-curricular lesson looking at finding and mapping 4-figure grid references. It is highly active and fun-based turning your classroom into a hunt for treasure. View the resource for full instructions. There is room for some extension work to look at L5 6-figure grid references and all activities are supported by my Numeracy Cards. Please leave comments and let me know how it goes. Mathematics of Coordinates III - Four Quadrants

Mathematics of Coordinates III - L4 Four Quadrants This lesson covers work in four quadrants and progresses onto equations of simple lines. There is also an online game which is a good pleanry or engager. At the end there is some access to higher work understanding the calculation of linear functions. Lots of opportunities for looking at key terms and describing patterns. The powerpoint is just the basis for activities. As always provide feedback and comments and follow me @boostprogress.

Graphology of bar charts - L4+

A fantastic activity for maths or science focused around making simple paper helicopters and collecting data on how quickly they fall. This lesson was observed by OFSTED on the last lesson of a two day inspection with a lower-ability math group and achieved a 2 judgement. You can extend the activity to add stretch and challenge. Still suitable for L4 - L6 applications or a fun method of GCSE teaching or revision. As always follow on @Boostprogress and leave feedback.

A lesson to cover the expansion of brackets for L4+ students looking at + x + and + x - only. There the basic lesson outline for you to enrich with questioning and other resources. If you have any ways of improving this resource then please email me. You can also follow me on twitter @boostprogress

Mathematics of Words VI - Making algebraic Formula

This lesson follows on from the previous one (V) and gets students to put together formula for the perimeters and areas of squares, rectangles and triangles. These are set as a problem-based learning tasks for froup arrpoaches and there is then some extension tasks using the construction cubes. Lots of opportunities for discussions and exploring students thinking. Introduces the idea of proofs as well. Lesson works well for L5+ though could be higher depending on shapes used. There is also an assessment from Kangaroo maths attached. Follow me on twitter @boostprogress
Mathematics of Words V - Speed Formulae

Mathematics of Words V - Speed Formulae

This level 5+ resource can be delivered in maths or science and should take two to three hours to deliver. Ideally the speed section should be combined with some simple practical activity around falling objects (terminal speed) or cars down a slope. The worksheet is also useful for extension. There is an extension section at the end for L6 students to construct formula. Follow me on twitter for updates on latest resources: https://twitter.com/boostprogress

A2 Biology - Inheritance - 5 - Sex Linkage This is the fifth lesson on the GCE A-level Biology series on 'Inheritance' and as the title suggested covers Sex Linkage crosses. Tasks are differentiated at A, C and E standards. All the familiar examples are covered including Mendelian pea characteristics and coat colour. If there are suggestions or amendments to improve this resource then please let me know.

Mathematics of Word IV - Expanding Brackets L5+

A resource for L5+ or grade C pupils. Requires Maths Watch videos. There is a linked lesson at L4+ in my resources if this is too demanding. Once again the basis for a lesson and does not contain the lesson plan or rich questioning resources. It should also be followed with some worded problems and contextual examples which I may add soon? Please add any suggestions to comments for improvements. The second lesson now looking at simplification of expressions using single, double and mixed expressions. Plenty of diffentiation for progression in pupil questions. Appropriate for L4+ students and can be supported by scrabble-based card sort. Please provide any suggestions and remember this is only the basic lesson outline and does not include rich questioning or pupil analysis of the cognitive challenge of individual expressions.
