Separation Techniques - Aliens Blood

A series of 2 or 3 lessons that address separation techniques: filtration and paper chromatography. The filtration uses a mixture of sand, iron filings and water and for chromatography you need filter paper chromatography strip and a suitable colors of felt tip or highlighters. There are frames provided for students to record their learning on and a second copy for teachers to complete for peer-assessment. The lesson is ideal for learners between 8-14 years of age in science or classroom settings. Please also complete your own risk assessment, specifically around the solvent for chromatography: in my practical I used ethanol as it dissolves pigments in pens. Alternatively, you could try water for water-soluble pens and inks, if necessary. All images are obtained using creative commons licence or my own images.

The PPT contains a range of activities for use with either BTEC Applied Science group or KS3 L4+ groups. Resource covers nature, types and causes variation and inheritance examples. There are a range of activities, including fingerprint and eye colour analysis and images for group tasks. Mr Men/Little Miss activity was 'borrowed&' from another TES donor as I liked it so much! Inheritance covers eye colour, tongue rolling and thumbs using punnet squares. Finally the determination of gender and meiosis. As always leave feedback and follow @boostprogress and @CE4ET.
