Mathematics of Coordinates I - L4 First Quadrant

(0)
A first lesson for L4 pupils, possibly even L3+ students, beginning with key terms, comparison of photographs of graphs drawn by three pairs of pupils and then pupils drawing their own first quadrant. Pupils then identify coordinates from the first quadrant and points find points along lines in the first quadrant and an unknown shape. Resource finishes with a game for pupils and they may design their own version as well. Many opportunities for group approaches. As always follow me on twitter @boostprogress and provide feedback comments.

These resources for L4+ focus on the changes between states of matter and were supported by a decent video, three practicals of melting ice and Salol and extracting Salt from Rock Salt. There is also a display task at the end. Please do your own risk assessments. These resources are just the basics for building your own lesson plans. As always please leave feedback and follow @boostprogress and @CE4ET.

GCSE Core Science - Food and Health - Biology: Burning Food

GCSE Core Science - Food and Health - Burning Food This resource is one of four lessons and perfect for students of middle to lower abilities at targeting 'C' grades at the end of their course. The focus is on obtaining energy from food and these resources support the basic burning food to heat water practical. There is a good video link and then very strong components to analyse and graph the practical results, developing key How Science Works skills. There are also some differentiated activities and tasks, including a nice energy game. If you have ideas for improving this resource then please let me know.

Mathematics of Words V - Speed Formulae

This level 5+ resource can be delivered in maths or science and should take two to three hours to deliver. Ideally the speed section should be combined with some simple practical activity around falling objects (terminal speed) or cars down a slope. The worksheet is also useful for extension. There is an extension section at the end for L6 students to construct formula. Follow me on twitter for updates on latest resources: https://twitter.com/boostprogress

Mathematics of Coordinates III - L4 Four Quadrants This lesson covers work in four quadrants and progresses onto equations of simple lines. There is also an online game which is a good pleanry or engager. At the end there is some access to higher work understanding the calculation of linear functions. Lots of opportunities for looking at key terms and describing patterns. The powerpoint is just the basis for activities. As always provide feedback and comments and follow me @boostprogress.

This resource is for setting the cognitive demand of common numeracy objectives. This can inform outstanding planning and setting appropriate differentiation within and across lessons. If you feel any verbs are misplaced then please feedback, although some may be used in differentiated contexts. Follow me on twitter for updates on latest resources: https://twitter.com/boostprogress
Separation techniques - Alien's Blood

Separation techniques - Alien's Blood

A series of 2 or 3 lessons that address separation techniques: filtration and paper chromatography. The filtration uses a mixture of sand, iron filings and water and for chromatography you need filter paper chromatography strip and a suitable colors of felt tip or highlighters. There are frames provided for students to record their learning on and a second copy for teachers to complete for peer-assessment. The lesson is ideal for learners between 9-14 years of age in science or classroom settings. Please also complete your own risk assessment, specifically around the solvent for chromatography: in my practical I used ethanol as it dissolves pigments in pens. Alternatively, you could try water for water-soluble pens and inks, if necessary. All images are obtained using creative commons licence or my own images.

A series of resources for building two or three lessons around negative numbers and the addition and subtraction of negative numbers. There are also some useful plus and minus cards to support L3 and L4 pupils with a kinesthetic approach. The video links also offer some useful links to science and temperature measurement, Please let me have feedback.

Mathematics of Coordinates II - L4 Maps This is a cross-curricular lesson looking at finding and mapping 4-figure grid references. It is highly active and fun-based turning your classroom into a hunt for treasure. View the resource for full instructions. There is room for some extension work to look at L5 6-figure grid references and all activities are supported by my Numeracy Cards. Please leave comments and let me know how it goes. Graphology of bar charts - L4+

A fantastic activity for maths or science focused around making simple paper helicopters and collecting data on how quickly they fall. This lesson was observed by OFSTED on the last lesson of a two day inspection with a lower-ability math group and achieved a 2 judgement. You can extend the activity to add stretch and challenge. Still suitable for L4 - L6 applications or a fun method of GCSE teaching or revision. As always follow on @Boostprogress and leave feedback.
Skills for Science

Skills for Science

This is one of our "Skills for Science" which supports 11-16 year olds with the development of softer skills of How Science Works. They are all focused around practical tasks and then focus on a area, such as planning experiments, experimental safety, data collection and mathematical analysis and evaluation. They are ideal for the new GCSE Science specifications in the UK and more general aspects of wider science education in the USA. All are high quality and well supported with images and relevant contexts.
Graphology of Independent Variables

Graphology of Independent Variables

A great lesson for L4 - L7 or GCSE students in mathematics of science. The practical component can be done outside of a lab as well, as long as water is available. The focus is to explore types of independent variables and link them to appropriate graphing techniques. There are lots of opportunities to take the lesson in your own bespoke direction and I will shortly add a few more resources. If you are a mathematician then seek a scientist to get you started on this great cross-curricular opportunity! Of course any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. Use this resource to set 'I can.....' success criteria for students which match Bloom's heirarchy and traditional measures of attainment. In addition within the lesson use them to increase or build the cognitive challenge of subjsequent or differentiated tasks. I will soon post a few examples to help achieve this measure of outstanding lessons. Follow me on twitter for updates on latest resources: https://twitter.com/boostprogress

GCSE Resistant Materials revision maps

These four pages of excellent revision materials have been produced with the help of an A* student and focused on key aspects of the GCSE Resistant Material specification. There are four pages in all and they really helped my students with their revision for the examinations. The resources were mainly for AQA specification but cover many features from other specifications.
