Equality: Making It Happen - A guide to help schools ensure everyone is safe, included and learning

(0)
CSIE's go-to equality guide helps schools address prejudice, reduce bullying and promote equality holistically. Created with primary and secondary schools, this is a "seductively practical" set of reference cards covering all aspects of equality. It offers key information, simple and practical advice, equality audit tools, examples of good practice and links to sources of further information and support. As one Assistant Headteacher said: "this should be part of every teacher's toolkit". A SENCo has described the guide as “an absolutely amazing resource that is easy to use and extremely well designed” and an Inclusion Manager has said that it "can have an impact on children's life chances and, ultimately, on the kind of society we live in". "Equality: Making It Happen" is sponsored by teachers' union NASUWT and has won an Innovative Practice Award 2016 from the Zero Project, for a world with zero barriers. Extracts from "Equality: Making It Happen", including Frequently Asked Questions, equality audit questionnaires and a range of reference cards, are available either free or at £2 each from our CSIE shop: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/CSIE. Go ahead and explore, choose what is right for you and invite your colleagues to look too! CSIE is a charity that works for equality, not for profit, but relies on sales of resources for its income. Hard copies of "Equality: Making It Happen", including CD, are available from http://www.csie.org.uk/resources/current, where you can also access information on training and support for schools alongside the guide.

This reference table is an extract from "Contrasting responses to diversity: school placement trends 2007-13 for all local authorities in England" (https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/contrasting-responses-to-diversity-11363225), a report which has been researched and written for CSIE by Dr Alison Black and Professor Brahm Norwich, of the University of Exeter. This report is the latest in a long (since the 1980s) series of CSIE reports on school placement trends, i.e. the proportion of children placed in special schools or other separate settings by each local authority in England. It reveals huge variation among local authorities, which cannot be explained by the size of a local authority or its social or geographical characteristics. This information can help people reach better informed decisions about individual children's school placements and formulate better informed evaluations of provision at local and national levels.

Developing a single equality policy for your school: a CSIE guide

Published by CSIE in 2010, shortly before the Equality Act 2010 came into force, this guide offers a step-by-step guide for writing and reviewing your school's equality policy. Written with and for busy school practitioners, the guide remains relevant to today's legal context. Over and above offering help to complete a paper exercise, the guide invites school staff to explore their perspectives, articulate their commitment to equality and develop a safe, rich and positive learning environment. The guide helps schools demonstrate a well-considered position on equality and diversity and includes examples of schools' equality policies. Hard copies of this guide are available from http://www.csie.org.uk/resources/current. CSIE is a charity that works for equality, not for profit, but relies on sales of resources for its income.
