Interesting look at imagery in Narrative Poetry using an Australian Poem, The Man from Snowy River by Banjo Patterson. Lesson Plan outlines entire teaching sequence. There are two PowerPoints. One with annotation of how I did the lesson with children, the other one plain for your use. There is also a worksheet with differentiation at the bottom of the sheet. At the end of the lesson Children will have written their own stanza describing the station mentioned in the poem.

This lesson plan and presentation will help children understand how to infer a character's feelings rather than just writing the emotion. It involves a fun starter for the teacher - a little bit of acting, which the children love! If you are not a fan of acting you could get away with the text at the beginning of the presentation and the discussion. Children will end up writing their own paragraph inferring what a character is feeling. Differentiated planning.

A nice starting paragraph to springboard into a Fantasy story that children could write independently, for homework, or in a scaffolded way. There is a picture included and some directions to remind children to use literary devices.

Children can learn about the different rhyme schemes of Quatrains (4 line rhyming poems) using the theme of Christmas. Perfect for the last week before the Christmas holidays for creating poems to write in Christmas cards. Takes into consideration those of other faiths and suggests they could create a poem or card for another holiday. LO: to write a quatrain (four line poem) Bronze: I can write an ABAB rhyming quatrain. Silver: I can experiment with ABBA, AABB rhyme schemes. Gold: I can write poems with ABAB, ABBA, AABB and ABCB rhyme schemes.

3 Worksheets where children have to colour in the different types of Nouns up to: Blue = proper noun yellow = common noun red = pronoun green= collective noun purple = abstract noun LA sheet has first three MA sheet has collective nouns added HA sheet has abstract nouns added to that Children are asked to extend themselves by writing sentences after they finish colouring.

A bit of fun for Homework or you could alter and make it a lesson or activity. Children are asked to physically demonstrate prepositions ie: running around the park sitting beside their sister hiding behind the door they are to take photographs to bring in or glue into English or homework books if necessary. Could be used to create a fun display too! I offered prizes to my class for this task and some of the results were brilliant and hilarious. Real world learning!

This worksheet can be used as part of English lessons where there is a class reading book, as part of independent work, for comprehension lessons or for guided reading. Sheet asks the children to review the chapters of their book - liked, disliked, predict.

This lesson involves the playing of "Simon Says" to understand prepositions and prepositional phrases. there is lots of discussion and class writing a list of prepositions they know. Lots of movement and partner work. The worksheets are differentiated into LA, MA, HA with extension. Lots of fun and action in this lesson!

Discrete grammar lesson on verbs and adverbs and their placement in sentences. PowerPoint gives clear description and examples of adverbs and their function in a sentence. Group activity within PowerPoint to find the verbs and adverbs. Worksheet activity is a cloze passage with LA given words they could use on a separate sheet. To end the lesson have some children share their cloze passages and discuss use of adverbs. LO: To be able to use adverbs to quantify verbs.

Discrete grammar lesson on Contractions. Lesson plan includes YouTube video to watch on screen with your class. Worksheet uses popular song "Call Me Maybe" to explore contractions and expanding the contraction to full words. When I did this lesson with my class we ended with them trying to sing the song with the contractions expanded. Everyone was in stitches laughing! "I threw a wish in the well, do not ask me I will never tell" Gives them an authentic understanding of contractions.

This discrete grammar lesson is on Modal verbs. Activities within the PowerPoint include: Spot the modal verb class activity changing modal verbs to the negative cloze activity adding modal verbs to sentences. extension could be to write their own sentences and have a partner find the modal verbs. Answers are included in presentation to mark along the way - use these to do a mini-plenary.

This was co-created by a Year 6 class and could be used as a tool for self and peer assessment for the students as they create their myth and legend stories.
