Gas Exchange in Fish and Insects
Animated, interactive powerpoint which guides students through the countercurrent system of fish gills and the tracheal system of insects (28 slides). It is hyperlinked so that you can choose which bits to show. The accompanying document comprises three worksheets and answer sheets. They use a variety of cloze / colouring / short answer questions
Biological Molecules - Carb/Lipid Recall Tests
Five sheets of straightforward revision questions. Written to provide simple recall test of what students have learned and need to learn (to reassure them as much as anything). Taken pretty much directly from the AQA A-level Biology specification. Answer sheets are included. Would work well as a starter, plenary or on a VLE. Doesn’t say ‘test’ on it so that it can be used for consolidation within the lesson.
(The second carbohydrate sheet deliberately repeats some of the first sheet because I found that students needed a second go once they were more aware of what was required following the first one!)
Key words
carbohydrate ~ glycosidic bond ~ condensation ~ hydrolysis ~ glycerol ~ triglyceride ~ lipid ~ fatty acid ~ ester bond ~ sugar ~ phospholipid ~ monosaccharide ~ disaccharide ~ Benedict’s test ~ saturated ~ unsaturated ~ hydrophilic ~ hydrophobic
Biological Molecules Sorting Activity (A-level)
Sorting activity designed to familiarise students with biological molecules. Students sort molecules into groups of similar structures and try to identify them as fatty acids, glycerol, sugars, amino acids etc. 1 page with answers.
I have used it both to introduce biological molecules and to round things off once the students have met them all.
Action potential slider activity (A-level)
Students attach labels in the right place on a template. The template is lifted up behind a diagram of the action potential. One at a time, each stage of the action potential is revealed in windows. It is worth showing students a completed slider (from a distance!) so that they can see what they are aiming for. Craft knives or scalpels best for cutting out the boxes. Answer sheet included. Written to support A-level.
(Big font labels for labelling the diagram; Small font labels are for the voltage gated channel table)
Key words
Action potential, Neurones, Nerves
GCSE Circulation and Transport Revision Worksheet
Double sided GCSE revision worksheet - Circulatory system and Transpiration.
Anagrams, Join the word to the definitions, True/False, Cloze - a bit of everything, really.
Answer sheet provided.
Key words
Blood, Heart, Xylem, Transpiration, Platelets, Stomata
Glycolysis - drag and drop activity
Students edit the Word document to show the stages of glycolysis (oxidation, phosphorylation etc). The molecules are all drawn for them (hexose, glucose, phosphates); they need to copy and put them in the right places. 1 page, accompanied by an answer sheet. Written for A-level students. Works well on VLE as homework but I tend to use it where I can watch what their misconceptions are and deal with them. (‘ctrl d’ doubles an object, which is useful).
Classification - A-level (Powerpoint and two worksheets)
Fully hyperlinked 30-slide powerpoint and two worksheets. Used with A-level students.
Written in frustration at the lack of material available to stretch bright students on this subject; classification and phylogeny. The concepts can be difficult for students from 14-16 yrs but they do engage with them. Designed to generate discussion about some of the more contentious issues involved in classification. Two double-sided worksheets with answer sheets.
Metals, reactivity and extraction worksheet
A wordsearch, colouring, labeling worksheet to engage foundation tier GCSE students. Answer sheet provided.
AQA 9-1 GCSE Physics Equation Cue Cards (Combined Science & Separate)
23 Cue cards which have all the equations which students need to learn for AQA 9-1 GCSE Physics (both Combined Science and Separate Science).
They’ve only got 23 to learn (I resisted the temptation to add a few extra in to fill all 27 cards).
To print: Flip on long edge
Heart Disease and Smoking Data Analysis - 'Edit the powerpoint' task (GCSE)
Heart disease and smoking - data analysis task - A powerpoint for students to edit and complete. Written to give less able students something more interesting to do than endless worksheets. It worked pretty well when I used it in the computer rooms. I used it after a heart dissection. The answers are included as a second powerpoint. It is sufficiently general for any syllabus and concentrates on How Science Works. Would be easy to use on the VLE as a homework activity.
Transpiration and water uptake in plants (2 powerpoints, 2 w/s, crossword). Post 16
Animated, interactive powerpoint which explains water uptake (apoplast/symplast pathways), transpiration and xylem structure The water uptake worksheets (including a crossword) complement the powerpoint and include answers. The labelling the leaf powerpoint is a hyperlinked ‘click and name’ slide-show. Aimed at A-level.
Bundle
5 Biology Glossaries and 12 Crosswords (AQA 9-1 GCSE Combined Science Paper 1)
5 Glossaries and 12 crosswords to cover all of the Biology units of the AQA 9-1 GCSE Combined Science Paper 1 syllabus.
Cell Biology (3 cwd)
Organisation (Digestion) (2 cwd)
Organisation (Transport & Non-com Disease) (3 cwd)
Infection and Response (2 cwd)
Bioenergetics (2 cwd)
The crosswords are based directly on the glossary to encourage students to revise and then to test their recall. They are useful across the ability range. I tend to give neighbouring students different versions to discourage copying. They are roughly the same difficulty and could be used competitively.
Each crossword has about 20 words and an accompanying answer key with the same format as the original crossword for use on a projector for peer/self marking.
Ionising Radiation, Nuclear Reactors and Litvinenko (4 GCSE worksheets).
Aimed at foundation tier GCSE students. - cloze, colouring and a bit of reasoning thrown in. The Litvinenko sheet is a bit wordier but provokes discussion. You will find numerous news clips to illustrate it. Answer sheets included.
