Tax Facts, launched in July 2015, is HMRC’s tax education programme for young people. It has been designed to educate primary and secondary school aged children about how public money is raised and spent and to introduce them, in an interactive and engaging way, to their future responsibilities as taxpayers.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has developed Tax Facts as an accessible and free resource, to simplify the teaching of how public money is raised and spent. The teaching pack includes four suggested lesson plans but you can also use the material flexibly and customise it to fit your personal teaching style and the amount of time available. Tax Facts is aimed at students in the 14 to 17 year old age group, and can be used to teach students of different ability levels. Each lesson is built around a short animation, which you can view here or on YouTube: About HMRC — provides a general overview of what HMRC does, how taxes are collected and how the money is used (4 mins, 36 secs) Starting Your First Job — a young person’s guide to the tax implications of starting your first job — whether it’s a part-time job, a Saturday job or holiday work (5 mins, 58 secs) Working For Yourself — a simple introduction to the tax implications of starting a small business and becoming self-employed (6 mins, 12 secs) The Hidden Economy — an explanation of the hidden economy, what it is, its impact on society and how HMRC is tackling the problem (6 mins, 15 secs)

This pack forms part of the Tax Facts programme, developed by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) as an accessible and free resource, to simplify the teaching of tax. This section of the Tax Facts programme has been designed for young people who are planning to work in the construction industry. It provides an overview of the Construction Industry Scheme and explains who can use it and how tax is paid through the Scheme. The core component of this programme is a short 5 minute video, which introduces young people to the Construction Industry Scheme. The video is available free of charge on YouTube. The pack includes a suggested lesson plan and a number of exercises that can be used flexibly to reinforce the messages in the video. The material can be customised to fit your personal teaching style and the amount of time available.

Mae Ffeithiau Treth ar gyfer Plant Iau wedi cael ei lunio ar gyfer plant ysgol gynradd, rhwng 8 ac 11 oed. Mae’n eu cyflwyno i dreth drwy egluro mai trethi yw’r arian mae’n rhaid i bobl a busnesau ei dalu i’r llywodraeth. Mae’n egluro’r canlynol i blant mewn ffordd syml: • pan fo gennych chi swydd lle rydych chi’n ennill arian, rydych chi’n talu rhywfaint o’r arian hwnnw yn ôl i’r llywodraeth fel treth • os ydych chi’n rhedeg busnes, mae rhywfaint o’r elw mae’r busnes yn ei wneud yn cael ei roi i’r llywodraeth fel treth • mae treth wedi’i chynnwys ym mhris rhai o’r pethau rydych chi’n eu prynu hefyd. Wedyn, caiff yr holl arian treth hwn ei ddefnyddio gan y llywodraeth i dalu am y pethau sy’n bwysig i ni a’n teuluoedd, i’n cymunedau ac i’n gwlad. Junior Tax Facts has been designed for primary school children, aged eight to eleven. It introduces them to the subject of taxation by explaining that taxes are the money that people and businesses have to pay to the government. Junior Tax Facts can be used to support a number of aspects of the primary school curriculum: • recognising the rights and responsibilities of citizens • understanding how money plays an important part in people’s lives • appreciating that resources can be allocated in different ways and that these choices affect individuals, families, communities and our country. It also supports the promotion of British values by explaining the importance of tax law and the role we all play as taxpayers in paying for the things that are essential for our safety, health and wellbeing. Junior Tax Facts includes a number of resources that can be used flexibly, depending on the amount of time available and the particular focus of the lesson. The exercises can be included in maths, history, art and design lessons.
