I used this lesson for a Year 3 class on non-chronological report writing. The children used subheadings for their paragraphs on contrasting weather environments and what would be appropriate to wear in each. We used this lesson to write non-chronological reports about Greek monsters. Children choose which monsters they want to research and must find out five facts about each one. My lowest ability only managed two monsters in the time, whereas the top ability could find out, and draw very detailed sketches of, four monsters. The children drew their creatures on plain A6 paper and then cut around them and stuck them onto their reports. The powerpoint starts with a nasty letter to the headteacher trying to argue for shorter breaks. The children must discuss how they will put their side of the argument across for playtimes being essential. This is a 12-lesson unit plan of Charlotte's Web (including two lessons to watch and discuss the film) that I used with a mixed Y3/4 class. I did this as one whole lesson but it could be spread out as needed. The file includes a letter from the Easter bunny stating that he is going to retire. Next to it is a writing frame for the children to analyse, looking especially at the purpose of each paragraph. On the next page (I printed them double sided) is a shared plan and letter in response. On the final page is a new letter from the 'Bunny Bandit' who has captured the Easter Bunny and the children must write their persuasive letters independently in response. Thanks for looking! This resource helps children to understand how the author uses actions to describe how a character is feeling. Using four short quotes from Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach, children can draw a face depicting the feeling in the box and then think about how the character might move if they feel this way.
