The HFL Diagnostic Maths Assessment: End of Year Transition Tool supports with assessment of learning at the end of the academic year to inform transition and autumn term planning as children move to the next year group.
The papers cover the full National Curriculum content for each year group to support teacher assessment judgements and to inform planning for the next academic year. For Year 6 children, this will inform secondary school transition.
‘So what now? I know the gaps, but how and when do I address them?’
The multiple-choice questions have been specifically designed to identify where pupils are making common errors or have specific misconceptions. This will enable teachers to plan for pre-teaching and / or rehearsal by revisiting previously taught content.
Each set of assessment materials for Year 1 to Year 6 in single or mixed age classes contains the following:
Paper 1 – Arithmetic
Paper 2 – Reasoning
Digital markbook with filters and reports to enable forensic gap analysis
Planning and transition guide to precisely inform planning and teaching for the autumn term for the whole class, groups and individuals

Develop teacher modelling and children’s mathematical explanations using accurate mathematical language with the HFL Primary Mathematics Vocabulary Index.
Teaching and learning mathematical language is key to developing deep mathematical understanding.
The ability to use words to explain, reason, justify and communicate mathematically is important to help pupils clarify and organise their mathematical schema.

The ‘End of Key Stage 1 - Mathematics Assessment Toolkit’ provides Year 2 teachers and subject leaders with a suite of resources and analysis tools to analyse the strengths and areas of development through detailed question level analysis following the completion of a set of practice SATs papers.
This will also support projections of the percentage of children likely to reach age-related expectations.
Accompanying the analysis spreadsheets, documents and tracking tools is a digital guidance video that explains each of the resources and how to use them.
2022-2023:
The toolkit now includes
an analysis spreadsheet for the 2022 KS1 arithmetic and reasoning SATs papers to support teacher assessment judgements for the end of Key Stage 1.
a table that links the TAF statements for ‘working at the expected standard (EXS)’ with questions in the 2022 SATs papers.

The ‘Year 6 Maths SATs analysis toolkit’ provides teachers and subject leaders with resources and analysis tools to identify specific areas of learning strength and development for pupils and classes when using any past SATs papers as practice (2016-2022).
Accompanying the analysis spreadsheets, documents and progress tracker is a digital guidance video that explains each of the resources and how to use them.
There are 5 resources within this SATs analysis toolkit. These resources are:
• KS2 2016 / 2017 / 2018 / 2019 / 2022 Question Level Analysis tools (5 separate Excel documents)
• National Curriculum Coded Domain Referencing Support (PDF)
• Raw and scaled score progress and attainment tracker (Excel)
• SATs Analysis Toolkit Digital Guidance
• SATs Analysis Toolkit Guidance (PDF)
This guidance document aims to support Year 6 teachers and mathematics subject leaders with using the analysis tools to identify both areas of strength and areas of development for Year 6 cohorts following completion of any of the 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022 SATs papers.

In this sequence for a mixed-age Y1&2 class, pupils will build upon their understanding of the number system between 0 and 20, think about patterns and the properties of numbers as they get bigger, up to and just over 100 in Year 2. The skill of regrouping (partitioning) numbers will be practised and pupils will transfer their knowledge of regrouping ones and tens into different models. This will continue to highlight the importance of ‘10’ in our number system and will provide another opportunity to explore the place value system by creating units of ten from ten ones on beadstrings and on 100 squares.

The ESSENTIALmaths Mixed Age Planning is written to support the curriculum for primary teachers. The sequences are written as a spiral curriculum in which learning is built upon step by step, sequence by sequence and year on year. It is aspirational and ensures progression and coverage through the primary phase for pupils in mixed age classes of Years 1 & 2, Years 3 & 4 and Years 5 & 6.
Concepts in the parallel year groups have been carefully aligned.
This supports teachers to manage teaching and learning focuses in the classroom.

This sequence focuses upon position and direction. Pupils often struggle with the complexity of language needed to describe position. The context of the language is broad, varied in real life and requires plenty of rehearsal across a range of curriculum areas.
Rotations and the related language is introduced to Year 1. Links are made to time and the clock face. Year 2 apply this learning to compass points and to turns when following and giving directions.
Ordinal numbers are used in real-life contexts such as position in a queue or floors of a building. These are then combined with positional language such as ‘left’ and ‘right’.
Pupils are familiar with creating patterns. Repeating patterns provide opportunities for applying ordinal numbers to describe the position of shapes within the pattern or to identify shapes and their properties within a sequence.

This sequence briefly revises learning about angles from Year 5 and then builds further to find missing angles by applying what pupils know about angles in shapes, around a point and on a straight line. The new learning in Year 6 focuses upon pupils needing to be able to recognise angles that are vertically opposite as equal. This sequence provides a brief opportunity to consolidate and apply this knowledge in the context of problem solving in which pupils will be asked to draw on a range of knowledge and skills.
The HFL maths advisers have mapped and connected the curriculum in each year group term by term. Each half-term is developed with an easy to pick up and use set of sequences with step by step guidance. Examples of how concrete and pictorial representations can benefit pupils’ learning as well as other mastery techniques are included. Ideas to deepen and extend mathematical thinking for all learners, examples of great questions and resources to support pupils’ talk and reasoning are embedded.
