Students match the rocks (a) to their properties (b) and uses (c). Alternate Uk spelling option included. -Match it! Students sort the images into those that are electrical conductors and those that are electrical insulators -Use it! Students look at the photographs (slate roof tiles, marble archway, granite kitchen surface and writing chalk). They write about why the properties of each particular rock suit the purpose it is being used for in the photograph. -Investigate it! Students plan and carry out an investigation to test rock permeability. -Observe it! Students carry out a simple experiment to separate the materials in clay, loamy and sandy soil. They draw diagrams of their findings. Included are detailed, clear instructions on how to set up the activities. Also included is a KWL (what I know already, what I would like to know and what I learnt) for student to complete prior to and after the unit. Please note: Some of the activities require additional resources. These include samples of different rock types (i.e. chalk, limestone, sandstone, marble, granite and slate), magnifying lenses, clear containers for soil experiment and pipettes.
