ESL Listening Lesson for C1 Students: Clint Smith - The Danger of Silence

(0)
This thought provoking lesson is based on a poetic TED Talks presentation by Clint Smith. The speaker gives an evocative spoken word presentation on the themes of courage, compassion and integrity. The language focus of the lesson is the use of metaphor and simile. Students are asked to use context to work out the meanings of the metaphors and create their own metaphors and similes to describe people, things and abstract ideas and experiences. It has been specifically developed for Advance ESL students but can be easily modified as the basis of an English lesson with native speakers. Using Conditional Sentences (B1 & B2)

New update: includes B1 and B2 presentations, redesign with animated assessment quiz, lesson notes and additional student tasks. ESL students often struggle with conditional sentences. Here I have provided a comprehensive lesson plan for both intermediate (B1) and upper intermediate (B2) students. These dynamic Powerpoint lesson plans are ideal for online or classroom lessons. They include a range of speaking and fluency activities for you to breathe some life into what is often a difficult area of English for students to master. Both lessons, designed to accommodate intermediate and upper intermediate students, have been conscientiously structured to present learners with a clear inductive analysis of the structure and meaning of conditional tenses. Slides are accompanied by a variety of tasks and exercises that not only get your students speaking and producing the forms in context, but also assess their learning as they go through the lesson. Presentation is an important part of the learning experience and these Powerpoint lessons will grab your students’ attention, adding a colour to an otherwise dour grammar lesson. Most importantly, by the end of the lesson, students will have a better understanding of all four main conditionals and be able to use the forms with much more confidence.

These lessons come complete with separate notes for online lesson and are ideal for English language students who are struggling with sentence structure when writing. Knowing a range of subordinate conjunctions and how they are used is vital for ESL students to improve their writing and pass Cambridge and IELTS exams. Knowledge of these range of function words helps students express their ideas more coherently. Students will learn to use language to show contrast, concession and support their ideas. These presentations offer a variety of tasks and fluency exercises throughout, keeping students fully engaged and assessing their learning as they move through the lesson. Both presentations can last up to 90 minutes depending on the class size and the use of activities as students are carefully taken step-by-step through the grammar concepts. As with all of the English Evolution Learning presentations, the animated slides and activities in the lesson on getting your students speaking and using the language in context whilst also assessing their knowledge. Most importantly, by the end of the lesson, students will have a clear understanding of why subordinate conjunctions are one of the main building blocks to comparing, contrasting and expressing ideas effectively across sentence level when writing and speaking.

This 90 minute lesson plan is based around two short films on presentations and can be used with upper level and advanced English language students. The topic focus is on giving effective presentations and using English language skills in a practical way, but it is also about listening for detail and understanding. It is specifically suited to business English lessons or EAP students, however, it can also be used as an introduction to presentations for native students or as a vocational lesson in business. More than just practicing listening for detail and presentations, this lesson requires learners to practice note taking, particularly relevant for EAP students. Students also receive a worksheet giving them great advice on how to give presentations. Visit www.englishevolutionlearning.com for more teaching materials.

Developing Strong Arguments in Academic Writing

This full lesson plan is from Unit 3 of the English Evolution Academic Writing course. It is a 90 minute lesson that provides a thorough direction and supporting material for students who intend to write university standard academic essays. Many students find it very difficult to produce good academic writing because they struggle with the concept and format of writing strong argumentative texts. This is particularly difficult for foreign language students, which is why many must attend EAP (English for Academic Purposes) courses before they are assured their place in English universities. This powerpoint lesson includes a range of activities and accompanying worksheets that will ensure both ESL and English language students have a clear understanding of how to produce good argumentative academic writing.
