Unit of work for the novel “Once” by Morris Gleitzman. Due to the nature of the book and the short chapters the unit is designed for the chapters to be read in class. There are guides for each chapter to help the pupils focus on what is happening. Each Powerpoint focuses on a different chapter and task. Tasks include: Storyboarding Understanding and Inference Questions Studying character Studying theme Descriptive Writing Creating tension There are also resources on pupils doing a group task on the chapters and resources to help write a critical essay on the main character, Felix.

Each PPT slide had a short paragraph or passage taken from a range of sources (fiction and non-fiction) Underneath each paragraph is three tasks. A Must, A Should and A Could - this allows for pupils to work through each lesson starter at a pace suitable for them. These are analysis based tasks looking at things such as word choice and sentence structure. Would be useful for a class working on Close Reading/Reading for UAE. Have been used as lesson starters of an extenstion activity for pupils.
