This is the first lesson in a Year 7 SOW developing a Survival Guide booklet. This lesson focuses on how to create a front cover for the booklet which will suit the target audience and purpose.
The following lessons in the SOW include writing to persuade, inform, instruct etc. Please see my shop for more lessons from this SOW.
A revision booklet designed for use with lower ability GCSE classes in preparation for the new specification exams. The booklet aims to narrow down the number of quotes the students will need to memorise while also allowing room for them to make notes on the way characters and themes link to context.
A lesson to teach six persuasive techniques to Year 7 students (although could be used with other KS3 years or even KS2 depending on ability level). Students love the Norwegian looking FLARRD and enjoy trying to pronounce it in an exaggerated way. The drawing was a very basic doodle of what a FLARRD might look like -you could swap this for your own interpretation. The grid can be used as a beetle drive style game - students roll a dice and then have to find an example of the persuasive technique before drawing that section of their creature, this would require you to provide one or several persuasive writing extracts that feature the six techniques or alternatively you could ask students to write their own examples.
This lesson is designed to be used as part of the Survival Guide SOW, which is available in my shop, although it can be used independently.
A one-off lesson looking at some of the background to Dickens and Dickensian England before creating a Dickens style ghost story. Could be used as an introduction to the work of Dickens, as part of a creative writing scheme or as a stand alone lesson.
A lesson aimed to encourage pupils to begin experimenting with structural techniques in order to reach the higher levels in creative writing tasks. This lesson focusses on the use of dual narrative through the use of well known fairy-tale characters.
A 9 lesson sow. Each lesson has differentiation for lower and higher ability pupils. There is also a strong focus on the use of gothic elements within the short story.
A powerpoint which can be printed as a textbook plus the accompanying powerpoint lessons - can be teacher led or pupils can complete tasks unaided. Each lesson is differentiated three ways, there are also SPAG tasks, an optional flipped classroom task and a reading assessment. Also included is a murder mystery lesson designed to be used before introducing the topic.
A scheme of work that focuses on introducing pupils to the play by and Shakespearean language through analysing the sub-plot of the fairy argument. Combines lessons which involve group and individual work as well as a creative writing section based on the fairy theme.
3 lessons which can be used in combination as part of an introduction to 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. The lessons focus on beginning to analyse Shakespearean language; using careful vocab choices to create atmosphere and recapping simile and metaphor to add detail to description.
This is a free resource which accompanies a lesson which is available in my shop, see link -

A 6 lesson SOW for Year 7 introducing skills required for persuasive, informative and instructive writing through the creation of a Survival Guide Booklet. Although the SOW is 6 lessons long it can take longer if pupils are drafting work in their books before writing up their neat copy for the booklet pages.
Their are templates available for the pages in a separate, free download (see my shop).
Please note there is also a free download of Lesson 3 (Persuasive Writing 1) available if you would like to take a closer look before committing to the whole scheme.
A grid based lesson that encourages students to be more independent in their learning by choosing for a bank of tasks to analyse poetry. This resource can be used in many different ways depending on student ability levels - this allows for various levels of differentiation within the same lesson. In this ppt I provide slides themed around exploring poetry linked to the theme of 'lions' (along with two poems which can be used in the lesson) as well as providing slides without any link to lions so that you can use the same resource with any poetry of your choice.
The fourth in a series of lessons focussed on the fairies. This lesson looks at the animals that the fairies are scared of and how that links to Oberon's plan. See my other resources for the lead up to this lesson.
A powerpoint and handout that covers a range of creative ways in which the text can be interpreted. Designed to be used as an extra revision session specifically aimed at high ability pupils but could also be incorporated into a lesson.
The last in a series of lessons focussed on the fairies. This lesson looks at why Titania gives in to Oberon and what our final opinion of both characters is. See my other resources for the lead up to this lesson.
This lesson covers a small section of the captain’s speech in 1:2 and a large chunk of 1:3. The lesson is designed to follow Macbeth 1:1 (which is available from my shop) and encourages students to engage with whether or not Macbeth lives up to our expectations.
The second instalment designed to introduce pupils to the more archaic vocabulary that they will find in pre-1914 novels. Can be used as definition or spelling tests or both. Each week is linked by a theme which isn't revealed till the test - this allows pupils to guess the theme, introducing an element of competition. This set of 8 weeks also includes a Christmassy week!
The second in a series of lessons introducing Y7 pupils to analysing Shakespeare. The extract focuses on Oberon and Titania’s initial argument and deciding who is in the wrong. The lesson is differentiated for different levels with the very top most ability beginning to introduce context into their analysis and choosing their own quotes, while lower abilities can follow a framework for support.
