This is a relatively short activity that can be used during the first lesson to help you learn more about your students. The students fill in the information, cut out the beaker and either hand this to their teacher or glue it into their books. It can also be used as an ice breaker game where the students fill in everything apart from their name. The beakers are then swapped around in class and students try to match up their beaker to the correct person. I have included a word document version, so you can edit the writing prompts.

This printable scavenger hunt is an engaging and student-led, low-prep task that helps your students review Newton’s Laws, manipulating the F = ma equation, balanced and unbalanced forces, as well as net forces, weight and friction. There are twelve questions on printable station cards included (three printing options). This fun activity that allows your students to practice applying their learning about forces and motion. The activity contains four questions that require calculations (finding the net force, or F = ma calculations). The remaining eight questions are conceptual or help students revisit their knowledge and understanding of forces and motion. To prevent students from following others around the loop, I usually print 4 to 5 sets on different coloured paper and have smaller groups of students follow a ‘colour loop’, e.g. the green or blue station cards. The cards are designed so that students can begin at any of the station. Once they have answered all twelve questions correctly, they will find themselves back at their first station. This is a stand-alone lesson on recent scientific discoveries and research. The lesson is mostly student-led and requires IT access. The task can be adjusted and adapted to fit your needs. I have used this lesson a number of times as a filler lesson or as a cover lesson task for planned absences. For the latter, I introduced the task at the end of the lesson prior to my absence, and then gave students another session after the cover lesson to present their findings. My students have enjoyed the more open inquiry nature of this task.
