Pay it Forward

Pay it Forward

(1)
One of my favourite films is called “Pay It Forward” (http://gb.imdb.com/title/tt0223897/). This resource is based on the film. There is a young boy who decides to make the world a better place, he completes three good deeds to three different people, and when these people want to thank him he asks them to complete three good deeds to three people and pay it forward. Therefore this resource is designed on that concept except that I have put in a time limit, the deeds are all completed in one day. From that the pupils could work out a general rule and then calculate the number of days it takes a set amount of people to have completed a good deed, or, the numbers of people after a certain amount of days. This incorporates geometric sequences.
The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse

(1)
Pupils are provided with some lego and a set of instructions. I have purposefully changed the order of the instructions. After following the set of instructions the pupils should have an object that doesn't resemble the picture of the lighthouse. This will open a discussion about why that is, why is the order of the instructions important? Then ask students to work out the correct order of the instructions. How is this related to maths, well the order of operations, (BIDMAS) is very important and hence by following the correct order of instructions you will end up with the correct answer.
Curious Surds

Curious Surds

(0)
A starter for introducing surds but could be applied to any topic. The idea is that you put on the board a complicated equation/shape etc, and get the students curious. You can ask them what they already know and what they want to know. You can then plan your lessons around their answers.
ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION

ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION

am currently preparing for September lessons and we are starting with addition and subtraction. This resource asks students to put the symbols in between the numbers to make the number sentence correct.
Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent Fractions

(1)
This resource is designed for pupils to find equivalent fractions. I have purposefully not put, "rearrange these fractions so that each row is equivalent", as I want the students to be able to find the relationship themselves.
Fraction odd one out

Fraction odd one out

(1)
A nice little starter for a fractions lesson. You show 4 images on the board, three of them show the same fraction, one does not. The students have to work out what the fraction is, and then decide which fraction is the odd one out. They must state their reason. I am working on more images for this and will put them on here, and Mentor4Maths website when complete.
Foundation Revision Cards with answers

Foundation Revision Cards with answers

These cards are to be used with students so the revision cards they make are valuable and have worked examples. The PDF needs to printed back to back 2 per page (preferably on A4 card) then cut in half. For more resources see www.mentor4maths.co.uk

Crossover with Mode, Range and Number

Crossover with Mode, Range and Number

This is the third in the crossover problems designed to promote crossover problems between topics in mathematics. This concentrates on mode and range with number topics such as factors, multiples, squares and primes. This can be used with crossover with median and number, and crossover with mean and number. I welcome any feedback!
Crossover with Median and Number

Crossover with Median and Number

The next crossover resource incorporates median with factors, multiples, squares, negatives, primes and cubes. It involves plenty of practise with problem solving, fluency and reasoning. All these resources can be used as a classroom piece of work, homework, assessment, broken up to mini-tasks, starters or differentiated resource. I welcome any feedback.
Inequality Facts
Mentor4MathsMentor4Maths

Inequality Facts

(1)
For this resource, students need to be in pairs. In their pairs they need to have access to a computer, all pictures printed off and the inequality slides printed. There is a table containing facts about each of the attractions and two blank rows for the students to find their own facts out about the attractions. They then work together to placing the pictures into the inequality. Alternatively, after studying the information provided and inserting other facts, one person can put two cards in the inequality and the other can guess the fact. This ensures the student practices their place value with the inequality rules, they will also need to be able to convert feet to metres and miles, minutes and seconds to hours to ensure that they are comparing facts correctly.
Restaurant Advertising Task

Restaurant Advertising Task

(1)
I have been asked to create some functional skills resources to help those completing apprenticeships in hospitality. This is a restaurant advertising task, where the student is asked to work out the total cost to advertise, split the cost between each department and then work out if it has made any difference. This involves money, addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, ratio and percentages. I am currently working on more like this, so keep a look out for them. This resource is available in word (so you can modify), pdf and as a presentation.
