Revision is key to success at GCSE and A Level, however, many students are unsure how to revise and don’t possess this vital skill. Like learning, all students revise in a slightly different way and so this Revision Menu has been a great resource for me in introducing some of the most popular ways to revise. I have started teaching my Key Stage 3 students about revision, why it’s important and helping them discover how they best revise using this menu. Revision clocks are a great resource for any classroom and allow students of differing abilities, in all Key Stages, to effectively recap material and identify gaps in their knowledge. Revision clocks give students an opportunity to retrieve knowledge on a chosen topic within a certain time restraint. For example, using the 5 minute template, students fill out one section of the diagram with as much information as they can remember about a chosen topic (no notes or books to help). If they are beginning to struggle during the 5 minutes and they can’t remember any more, then they pick up their notebook and using a different coloured pen, they add in the information they left out. This helps students to identify the gaps in their knowledge and aid their revision going forward. I have used this with Key Stage 3 students as well as students sitting GCSE and Alevel exams (the longer time periods are better for these older groups).
