I have worked with children for over 40 years. I specialised in Computer Science, SEN and Speech and Language. In 2005 I achieved joint first in the Becta ICT practice awards. I taught Computing to years 1-6 for seven years. I created the Advanced  Colourful Semantic resources to help the children in my groups understand grammar and sentence formation. I wanted a scheme I could introduce in Reception Class then use as they progressed through school individually, in groups or full class.

It is vital that we teach our children to keep safe online. Hopefully by sharing this resource you can help to give your children the knowledge to keep themselves safe while enjoying the Internet. These resources have been developed over the last 11years but due to their nature, they are always a work in progress. It is part of my Communicating, Collaborating and E-Safety planning (DL-CCE) Children learn how to communicate and share information in a variety of different ways. They learn how to stay safe when using the Internet and how to keep personnel information private. They talk about current issues such as Cyber bullying/friendship, mobile phone use and sensible and safe use of all Technology. They also talk about being aware of how long they spend using this Technology and how they can take ownership of their usage. They discuss ‘The right to be unavailable’ and talk about turning off mobile phones and other devices. We try to help them understand that social networking is a wonderful way to communicate but that it can be time consuming and demanding if not used carefully. I hope these resources help you to ensure that your children have the knowledge to keep themselves safe and the tools to deal with problems or dangers that arise.

Algorithm (Instructions) for a Pirate Treasure Map

An algorithm is the set of instructions needed to complete a task. This is an activity to be used away from the computer.(Unplugged computing) Children to use and understand control language. They move the mini robot or floor turtle around the pirate map to hide the treasure. They write the route or algorithm on a work sheet so the treasure can be found by someone else. They write where the treasure is on the back, then swap sheets with someone. If the instructions lead to the wrong place they can fix or debug their algorithm. Children can design their own robots or use the printouts. Here are the * I can statements* I can use numbers in instructions. I can use a 90 degree turn. I know that control instructions must be precise and clear. I can predict what my turtle will do when using a verbal or written algorithm. I can follow a series of simple commands(algorithm) to move around a course. There is a pdf file and a PowerPoint presentation that can be used as a lesson starter. I have used this activity with Year 1-4

This is a little booklet to print out, it helps students practice their Word Processing Skills in Microsoft Word , Google Docs or similar. They can work at their own rate to score points for skills demonstrated. It is a useful activity to practice skills that have been taught, check retention or assess levels. It relates to my Digital Literacy/Multimedia Skills Ladder.Which I have now added to this resource.
