Literacy Unit of Work: Balanced Argument - Should the Vikings have invaded England? (3 complete weeks and Activities) This unit of work uses the text genre balanced arguments to discuss whether or not the Vikings should have invaded England in easy to follow way. Students are taught to learn actions for conjunctions, know the difference of open and closed questions, take part in a hot-seating activity and identify features of a balanced argument. There are also SPaG starter activities mainly aimed at year 6 objectives. The second week focuses on slight tweaks to the first week and the children are guided through writing a balanced argument on should monasteries keep the country's wealth? Finally, the children write a balanced argument independently about does money buy happiness? This unit of work includes all 3 stages of Pie Corbett's teaching sequence of work (imitation, innovation and invention). It contains 3 week overviews with a 72 slide SMART Notebook presentation, SPaG activities and differentiated independent activities. Literacy Unit of Work: Kensuke’s Kingdom (4 complete weeks and activities) This unit of work uses the novel Kensuke’s Kingdom written by Michael Morpurgo to develop reading and writing skills in an easy to follow way. The text is shared with the students through whole class reading and are encouraged to respond to the text through questioning and activities stopping at relevant parts. Throughout the scheme of work there are also SPaG starter activities mainly aimed at year 6 objectives but this could easily be adapted to suit any year group. The writing genres that are taught within this four week block are: diary entries, character descriptions, newspaper reports finally leading to the students writing and creating their own survival guide (How to survive being marooned on a desert island!). There are also opportunities to actively teach the students how to proof read and edit their own writing cutting down on teacher marking and work load. PLEASE NOTE: The white board slides have been created as flipcharts (ActivInspire - Studio) however, these can easily opened in SMART Notebook or Powerpoint. Guided Reading: USK2 - Exploring World War Two (7 Week Flipchart Slides and Activities) This guided reading teaching resource uses the Curriculum Visions Text The Second World War written by Dr Brian Knapp in an easy to follow way. Students are guided through reading comprehension that uses the complete questions from a modified 2017 Reading SAT paper through the different strands of reading comprehension. We also use the CGP SPaG activity books to supplement the SPAG curriculum. This could easily be changed or use other paper resources with SPaG activities. Group A is the higher ability children leading through to group E.
