Angles- Year 4/5- OBSERVATION

**OBSERVATION LESSON** A co-worker of mine asked would I plan a lesson observation with them on angles. A few years ago, I taught a similar lesson for an observation. Basically, this resource contains: A clear, detailed and differentiated lesson plan A simple but colourful powerpoint to use as a guideline 3 activities differentiated into high, middle and low Angle creators with arrows (just print, laminate and secure with a split pin). This lesson aims to engage a variety of learners. By using the angle creator, visual and kinesthetic learners can practically make the different types of angles that are being taught in this lesson. (Acute, obtuse, reflex, right angle, straight line angle) HA are extended by asking children to label the angles found in 2D shapes and how to measure them by using a protractor. The plenary asks children to spot angles in the clock face. A really enjoyable lesson. Please review.

Stories with Issues and Dilemmas

This was a fantastic week of English lessons, including lots of speaking and listening activities, resulting in effective writing. This genre was studied through the story ‘Journey to Jo’Burg’. To which we read the first two chapters online (pdf linked in planning) and ended up writing the third chapter as our ‘big write’ including an issue and dilemma. Lesson 1: Children explore the terms issue and dilemma by engaging in a conscience alley, forcing the child acting as the main character to make a decision based on a dilemma. (thoroughly enjoyable). Lesson 2: Children read through the chapter 1 and 2 (linked in planning) and underline dialogue, action and different words for the word ‘said’. This allows children to see the exact style used by the author in order for them to recreate their very own chapter 3 in the style of the story. Planning is also done in this lesson. Lesson 3: The success criteria is shared with the children and they are then allowed the remainder of the lesson to finish off their chapter 3. The end product was fantastic! The children came up with their own title for their chapter and really took on the style of the author, alternating between dialogue and action. It was fantastic! INCLUDED: *4 day detailed lesson plan *Colourful Notebook File *Success Criteria *Identifying features Prompt *Moral Dilemmas for discussion *Positive and Negative grid

OBSERVATION: Guided Reading Lesson

Shared/Guided Reading lesson based on the story ‘Journey to Jo’Burg’. This was used to inspire these kids and completely engage them with the story. My idea is for the starter, display three questions (see planning) and get them to write their answers in groups on post-it notes. Then stick them up on the IWB on a picture of South Africa (also in resources). This will engage them straight away with the text and what’ll happen. Then you’ll move on to explaining that the idea is to focus on what a dilemma is and what it is in this chapter. (The chapter is linked on the planning and you can download it as a pdf). The children should have a hard copy in front of them and together you will make a success criteria of what a good, interesting reader sounds like. Get them to critique you reading in a boring way. Children to sort pre-made laminated statements into positives and negatives about going to Jo’Berg. In groups children will then engage in a conscience alley (role-play) to thrash out both sides of a dilemma. You can do it as a whole class or small groups either. Children really get into the story this way and feel they’re helping Naledi choose her dilemma. Great, engaging lesson. Really enjoyed it!
Guided Reading: Making Connections

Guided Reading: Making Connections

Making Connections is a very valuable skill to teach in Guided Reading. Children learn to connect what they read to themselves, another text and the wider world, helping them to understand the text on a deeper level. Most of us tell the children that a good reader “makes connections”, but for the most part, only a handful of the children actually know what this means. This resource will explicitly teach your children how to make connections with what their reading to themselves, another text and the wider world. This resource can be used with ANY text. It teaches the SKILL of making connections and that can be applied to fiction, non-fiction and poetry. What’s included A detailed daily PowerPoint to structure the lessons and encourage children to engage in child talk/cooperative learning. Making Connections support cards- to provide children with the sentence stems in order to be successful when structuring a connection. Summarising Tweet template- to ensure children have understood the text read on a basic level before engaging in making connections. Children are challenged to include the main events, main characters etc in 280 characters. Making Connection activity Sheets. I hope this resource is useful for you. Please leave some feedback and let me know how these lessons went. I’d love to hear from you.

Back to School Activity

BACK TO SCHOOL!!! (Already?) One of my main goals on day one is to build relationships with the children and leave them go home on the first day feeling happy and safe in their new classroom environment. The idea behind this resource is that each child write a nice comment on their peers’ jigsaw pieces, so that by the end of the lesson, each child has a nice comment from everyone in the class. I then plan to cut the jigsaw pieces out and display them in the classroom for the year, for children to refer to anytime they wish. It also gives you an opportunity to set expectations for a more “busy” lesson, i.e. silent when walking around the room/no running/no pushing etc. Included is: The activity sheet A short powerpoint explaining how to engage in this activity! Please leave a review and let me know how you got on
Dissolving: 3 experiments

Dissolving: 3 experiments

(1)
This lesson involves an exciting experiment to understand the terms: *dissolve *solute *solution *solvent *soluble Children will work in mixed ability groups and conduct 3 different experiments to see which factors have an influence on dissolving. It worked fantastically in the use and understanding of the scientific terms listed above. Children will then feedback to the class about what they discovered from their investigation and as a class we will conclude as to which factors effect dissolving most. This lesson comes well resourced with: *a step-by-step guide, for each group, in how to conduct their experiment along with the equipment needed. *Key Vocabulary for reference or display purposes. *Flash cards explaining the terms for low ability or visual learners. *A detailed lesson plan *An interactive notebook file *Post/prior assessment tool Overall, a very enjoyable lesson which allows the children to learn and understand the scientific terms in a practical way. Please leave a review and let me know how you and your class liked this resource.

I created this document to hand out to my parents at the beginning of the school year. It’s a short snippet of activities that parents could engage with with their children. There are 7 pages, including: *Some sample questions to ask children while reading. *Rate out of 10. To allow children to form opinions on what they’ve read. *Re-tell the story. To allow children to order parts of the story. *Change the ending. This allows children to take their understanding to another level. *Strategies for parents when reading with their children. See my preview for a clearer idea of this resource.

World Cup 2022 Qatar: Maths

Enjoy some fun Maths activities by engaging the children with the World Cup 2022. The country of Qatar is getting ready for 2022, so why shouldn’t we? A mathematical activity to engage children with converting units of measure (World Cup Theme). Lesson Plan included. Familiarise the children with the layout of the stadiums. Children must measure the distance between a letter and a stadium. Then because 1cm=35 minutes, they must then calculate how long it would take to get to said stadium. For example: How long will it take A to get to Lusail stadium? Using your ruler, measure the distance from A to Lusail stadium. If it’s 7.6 cm- round to the nearest whole number which is 8cm. 1cm = 35 minutes so 35 x 8 = 280 minutes =4 hours 40 minutes Children must then fill in a table with their findings. A fun activity for the whole class. Please let me know what you and your class thought of this resource- I can’t wait to hear your thoughts. I have included a map of Qatar with the football stadiums.

Comic Strip Art

This is a very fun lesson in which I spent half a day creating with my class. It involves learning about the artist Roy Lichenstein while creating a fun comic strip like creation. This is a perfect 'end of term' activity and children genuinely had a great day engaging with this type of art. The resource includes a colourful, detailed notebook, which contains lots of links to video clips and details on how to make this creation (step-by-step). It also includes a lesson plan. Perfect for the run-up to and during the Fifa World Cup, this pack includes worksheets and fun activities and a teacher’s guide to assist you during your lessons. Included in this pack: Pass it like Portugal: a fun task that involves children recording the points on an axis. They won’t even realise they’re doing a Math activity as it’s to record the football passes of the Portuguese team. Pass it like___: This can be used in small groups or as an early finisher task. Following on from the above activity, the children can plot the points of a team of their choice and give the activity to a peer to solve. Dream Team: young students need to form opinions on what makes a good player and be able to discuss their opinions. Creating a class discussion on the players in the World Cup and then allow children to create their ultimate dream team from different players in the World Cup. Dream Jersey – the children can comment on and discuss the jerseys in the World Cup. Talk about their likes/dislikes on the patters, colours, shapes etc and then create their own dream jersey for their dream team. This would make a lovely display also. Fact File – using the internet, allow the children to research 4 players of their choice and to create a fact file on them. This could be done as a homework task also. Teacher Guides & Answer Sheets Each activity comes with a teacher guide to suggest ways to complete each task. There is an answer sheet as well for the Maths activity for self-assessment or peer assessmenent. Multiplication Revision Game Year 4/5

Multiplication Revision Game Year 4/5

(0)
This is a game I play frequently with my class at the end of the multiplication topic/year to check assessment. The picture as the cover image shows the lower ability game. This resource is differentiated for higher abilities and middle abilities. This game works exactly like X's and O's, except children must solve the question within the box of their choice, get the answer correct before they can put an X or an O in. My class absolutely love this game, and the higher ability game provides a great challenge with *missing number multiplication *two-digit multiplication *multiplying decimals. A really successful game, which is really useful come the end of the year. Please leave a review and check out my other resources: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/Morrisr9

Reception High Frequency Words Game

(0)
This resource is a fun way to encourage children to read the high frequency words in Reception. They will need to be cut out, with the elephant stuck to the back of the word and then laminated. Once they're done once, you'll have them forever. It consists of a selection of the high frequency words at Reception level, with a colourful background to keep them interested. You will need to print two copies of this resource in order to play the game. I played it in groups of 4: *Give each child in the group an even amount of cards. *Instruct them to leave them all in front of them (elephant facing up). *The first child must place their first card down, sound it out/read it. *The next child repeats etc until there is two of the same words placed one after the other. *They all must race to say SNAP if two cards sitting on top of each other are the same word. *The person to say it first, gets all of the cards in the pile and they begin again. This resource can be used as an extension activity for early finishers, or as a revision tool at the end of the year, or even as your weekly game to expose children to these words more frequently.
