Common Core Listening Practice -- Here Be Dragons!

(0)
We all know our students could use practice listening! The Common Core certainly believes this to be necessary. Common core standardized tests such as Smarter Balanced specifically require students to listen to spoken passages and demonstrate their ability to comprehend, interpret and apply information derived from spoken text. Students will listen to an informative NPR story about how different cultures perceive dragons. They will also learn about the history of dragons in cultures from ancient times to the present. Students are provided with space to take notes while they listen. Then students answer a variety of multiple choice questions about the article they listened to and write a response to an essay question. These 2 worksheets contain math problems aligned with the 7th grade common core state standards (CCSS) listed below. [RP Ratios and Proportional Relationships] Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems. 2. Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities. a. Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin. b. Identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal descriptions of proportional relationships. c. Represent proportional relationships by equations. d. Explain what a point (x, y) on the graph of a proportional relationship means in terms of the situation, with special attention to the points (0, 0) and (1, r) where r is the unit rate.
