This resource tasks students with exploring the United States Census and analyzing the results and implications from that activity. The product is a two page worksheet that includes three separate tasks/activities. They are: Students will read an article about the winners and losers of the 2010 census. The article includes information on winners and losers of the census. Students must analyze this information to make informed inferences and analyze how the information presented will affect the United States and also where they live. A small chart the students will complete is also included in this section. Next, the document includes a graphic organizer that students will complete that has them analyze the effect of the census on their home state. Finally, students must answer extended response questions about the 2010 census and also the upcoming 2020 census. Questions include analyzing the effect of the census on the government, citizens, and other organization. Students must also use their knowledge of the previous (2010) census to understand the ramifications of the 2020 census. This product includes a Microsoft Word and a PDF version of the resource. This single page worksheet is divided into three different sections. The three sections are designed to teach students about the importance of the 1st amendment, the freedoms of the 1st amendment, and important 1st amendment Supreme Court Cases. The three sections are: Review: Students will list and explain the 5 freedoms of the 1st amendment. Prior Knowledge: Students will define and explain the following terms: judicial review and precedent. Graphic Organizer: Students will complete a graphic organizer of important 1st amendment Supreme Court Cases. Student will explain the freedom extended or restricted by the Supreme Court case and then explain the outcome of the case. The cases included in the organizer are: Schenck v. United States, Tinker v. Des Moines, New York Times Company v. United States, and Texas v. Johnson. The Declaration of Independence is one of the most important documents in American History. The basic ideas of the Declaration of Independence are still important today. This activity uses ideas that are important to learners/students and asks them to declare independence from something that limits their freedom in life. This document includes step by step instructions and response questions for students to answer as they create their own personal Declaration of Independence. This product includes two tasks: Task 1: Students will answer thought questions about freedoms and treatment they experience as a young person. This will help them develop a list complaints or “grievances” about their treatment. Task 2: Students will create a document declaring independence from something affecting their freedom. This will be a product creation. Students must then answer response questions based on their creation. This activity is great for learners in high school but could also be adjusted to lower grades. The activity asks students to connect a document from hundreds of years ago to an idea present in their own lives. Real world connections are made from this activity. This product includes a graphic organizer (found in the previews) in which students are responsible for researching a current events article or topic. This activity is designed to be completed in groups of 3-5. Instructions for grouping is included with the graphic organizer (activity). In groups, students are assigned roles for completing the activity. The roles are: *Computer Operator *- A group member should be assigned to acquire and set up the computer for the group to use. This person will be the primary computer user but the computer may have to be passed to other students within the group for them to complete their roles. Scribe - This person will be responsible for completing the handout. This handout can be completed online (scribe will become the typist) or these handouts can be printed for each group. Artist - The artist is responsible for creating an artistic representation of the article that was researched. Researcher - The researcher will be the primary person responsible for finding an article that is appropriate for the assignment. This person may also be in charge of searching for other pertinent information. Speaker - The speaker will share what the group found to the entire class. How this is done is up to the teacher. Student groups will complete the graphic organizer according to their specific jobs and roles. This resource allows for teacher changes based on use and preference. This foldable hands on project is a great, quick project to complete with students studying the causes of World War I. The study cube has students create a foldable cube that lists and explains the M.A.I.N. Causes of World War I. The causes include: M - Militarism A - Alliances I - Imperialism N - Nationalism This resource includes two versions of the cube that teachers can choose to use. The first version is a blank version in which students must find and input their own information for each of the causes (militarism, alliances, imperialism, nationalism) and then create or find a visual that could be used for World War I. The second version of the cube that is included has all of the sides of the cube completed and ready for students to use as a study tool. This version can also be used as an answer key. The cube is designed to be printed and then cut out. Students the fold the output on the lines of the cube and glue/tape the flaps. The cube works with regular printer paper and looks great when used with card stock. This product includes a Microsoft Word and PDF version of the resource. This product is a single page document that includes links to interactive games on the internet that students can play to review and learn about the American Civil War. The document can used online or printed for student use. The games included in the document include a timeline activity, Battle of Gettysburg, and slave v. free state activity. The website used for the games are: Quia Timeline Game: Students organize a timeline of six Civil War events chronologically. The document then asks students to list one of the events. Battle of Gettysburg Simulation: Students are tasked with attempting to win the Battle of Gettysburg. Students must make strategic decisions in this battle simulation to try to win the battle. The document asks students to describe their choices and the outcome. Rags to Riches Trivia Game: This game asks students trivia questions about the Civil War. Students try to win the most money in this gameshow style game. The resource asks students to play multiple times and to input the highest amount of money won in a single game*.* * Civil War Challenge and Discovery: This is the most involved game of the bunch and has students organize a map of 1860’s United States into Confederate, Union, and Border states. The game presents important information about each state while playing. The product tasks students with determining the number of each type of state and challenges them to play another game on the website. A one page answer key is also included.
