This great Harry Potter STEM project is aimed at middle school and high school ages!
There are 4 key activities with their own resources:
-Designing magical creatures
The only equipment required is colouring pencils and pens. This draws on the student’s knowledge of adaptation and habitats, as each creature must suit specific conditions. Also included within this activity is a set of task cards where students have to state how a mandrake is adapted to it’s life in the Hogwart’s potting sheds.
-Testing mystical flames
This is essentially a flame test practical where students spray compounds into the flame (a bunsen burner would be required for this practical- or a youtube clip of flame tests would suffice). Task cards and multiple choice questions included.
-Disappearing X on the marauder’s map
This practical revolves around a simple lab practical using standard school lab chemicals. A printable map is included and students place a flask over the ‘X’ on the map. When the solution changes from clear to cloudy, magically the ‘X’ disappears. Task cards included.
-Constructing a dragon’s lair
All that’s required for this practical is cocktail sticks and jelly beans. Students must construct a suitable lair and the teacher gets to be the judge. A planning sheet is included too. Nice and simple!
Finally there is a teacher notes section and a final puzzle is included as an extension task for early finishers.
This project has had rave reviews off teachers I have worked with and my class have said it’s their favourite project yet!

This is a great introductory resource for students who have prior knowledge elements but are new to atoms and subatomic particles.
History of the Atomic Theory Revision Resource
This resource encompasses the five atomic models through history. Students use the spin wheel to select one of the models at random. They then must answer the three key questions on this model:
What is the atomic model called?
Which scientist proposed the atomic model?
Describe three key features of the atomic model
Once students have answered the questions, they can check their answers using the comprehensive answer sheet. They can also record if they got their answers correct on the ‘repeat and tick’ sheet. This encourages students to use the spin wheel as an ongoing revision resource, aiming to reach the ‘know it’ level.
The atomic models featured include:
John Dalton (sphere model)
J J Thompson (plum pudding model)
Ernest Rutherford (nuclear modle)
Neils Bohr (planetary model)
Erwin Schrodinger (quantum model)
Also included in the resource is an instructions sheet, with helpful guidance on using the spin wheel as a revision tool.
Very simple preparation: print the sheets (set up in A4 PDF). The students can then cut out the pin wheel for themselves and push a pen or pencil through the middle for the wheel to spin around. I found clamp stands to be a useful alternative.
Naming and Drawing Organic Molecules
Included is two worksheets and two answer sheets. The worksheets include tasks on naming and drawing organic molecules from a selection of molecules (skeletal and displayed formula). The answer sheets cover all molecules in both worksheets.
Molecules included in the worksheets:
Alcohols
Aldehydes
Ketones
Carboxylic acids
There is an editable version of both worksheets and answer sheets included in the resource, should you wish to further adapt the worksheets to your own teaching.
Please feel free to ask any questions before purchasing.
This great resource includes a periodic table crossword and an answer sheet. The crossword clues each link to an element in the periodic table. For example:
Clue: The third halogen in group 7
Answer: Bromine
There are 10 clues and hence 10 words to fill the crossword puzzle. This is a great starter activity, plenary or extension task for students learning about the periodic table.
