Need a great lab activity to engage your students and light up your classroom? This activity combines everything that students love: lab work, flames and color. In this lab your students will try to identity the following six metal salts based on their emission colors. Calcium chloride: Orange Copper chloride: Blue green Lithium chloride: Red orange Sodium chloride: Yellow Potassium chloride: Light violet Strontium chloride: Red Just like every person has a unique finger print, the color of light emitted by a metal when heated in a flame is unique to that metal. The emission colors can therefore be used to identify specific metals. When the metal salts are placed in the flame the electrons in each atom absorb energy. This energy is used to move the electrons from their ground state to an excited state. When the electrons move back to a lower energy level they emit the absorbed energy as a particle of light called a photon. You can see a video of the flame test colors on my YouTube channel. Just starting out with Newton’s second law of motion? Don’t want to scare your students off with the equations and calculations? Then this is the perfect product for you. Using this product from my Tes shop your students will gain a strong conceptual understanding of how to apply Newton’s second law to many different situations. This is an important step for students to master before moving on to quantitative analysis of the motion of objects. Free body diagrams show the relative magnitude and direction of all the forces acting on an object. The number of forces shown on a free body diagram depends on the specific problem and the assumptions made; air resistance is commonly ignored to simplify the problem. If the forces acting on an object are balanced, then the object is not accelerating and is therefore either moving with a constant velocity or at rest. If the forces acting on an object are unbalanced, then the object is accelerating. At the top of each set of exercises there is a link to videos from my Step by Step Science YouTube channel. The videos provide detailed descriptions and additional examples that correspond to the problems on the exercise sheets. This is a great physics experiment that can be done at school or at home. It makes a good science fair project or just a fun activity to do with the kids on the weekend. You probably have most of the materials you need around the house or you can get them with a quick trip to the grocery or hardware store. The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the relationship between the number of times the wire is wound around the metal bolt and the strength of the electromagnet. This experiment incorporates many of the activities that scientists do every day, including building and testing scientific equipment, collecting and analyzing data and drawing conclusions from your observations. There is a full demonstration of this experiment on my Step by Step Science YouTube channel. Link to the video: https://youtu.be/Ar-6s_tF3tM An electromagnet is a type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by an electric current. The electromagnets you will use in this experiment are made from a length of wire wrapped around a large metal bolt. A battery will be connected to each end of the wire. A current will then flow through the coil of wire producing a magnetic field inside the coil. The metal bolt concentrates the magnetic field in the coil, making it stronger. The field disappears when the current is turned off.
