I started teaching Science and A level Chemistry in 1998. I am currently Head of Science in a very popular secondary school in Hertfordshire. It has always been a real interest of mine to challenge my students and to teach them science using innovative and novel approaches that allow them to have a greater understanding of the subjects covered.

Working out oxidation numbers using evidence rather than learning the rules

(0)
This activity is designed for Year 12 students studying Chemistry. Rather than teach the students the rules and then give them some examples to work through, this activity encourages independent thinking and problem solving skills. The students are given some of the values for oxidation states and have to figure out the rules. The task has been differentiated by support by proving a list of rules that can be issued if a particular student or group is beginning to struggle.

Sustainabilty game

This is a simple game devised specifically for unit C3 of OCR Twenty First Century Science GCSE. Students are put into groups and play a simple decision making game about making and selling a perfume bottle. The aim of the game is to generate discussion and ideas around sustainability and life cycle assessments which can be a rather dry topic to teach. This game was originally published for free in 2008. It has been slightly adapted for the new (2012) specification.
