Assignment 2.1-2.2 for new BTEC specification starting in September 2010. Assignment and work booklet is attached to enable pupils to meet grading criteria.

A variety of Chemistry assignments for the New BTEC First Specification. Feel free to use and adapt these assignments. They were originally written for an all boys comprehensive school but should be robust enough to meet the new criteria.

I created a Edexcel spreadsheet with a grade calculator to help teachers OR pupils work out their final grade. I also put all the BTEC criteria on one word document so it is easier to see/find. The pupils can also use this to tick off their criteria as they complete an assignment.

Worksheet I made to accompany a practical lesson using the circuits. Or it could be used as a starter or plenary for a year 7 group.

Simple, elements, compounds and atoms crossword which I used as a starter with a lower ability year 8 group.

each pupil was given an element from 1-20. They had to work out the electron structure of that particular element and make a poster using the templates provided. Part of the activity is the pupils choosing which template to use, depending on the number of electron shells their element has. Perfect for lower ability groups.

Made this to accompany the fusion 2 scheme of work. It relates to the first 6 lessons. From describing, elements, compounds, naming compounds and symbols. Used this with a lower ability science group in year 8. Could easily be adapted for years 7 and 9 also.

This lesson relates to new Edexcel Biology B specification, Topic 6 Lesson 1 - Microbial Techniques. The lesson illustrates what Aseptic techniques are (using a card sort) and students then summarise in their own words. It also outlines the different methods of measuring bacterial growth, counting, turbidity etc. It includes a series of exam questions and these are also embedded throughout the lesson. Contains a step by step lesson plan which can be easily adapted. A practical on aseptic techniques could be incorporated. 100 minute lesson but easily split into two separate lessons. Also contains an exam question associated with the Exponential Growth Constant as per the new specification.

Full A-Level Biology lesson. Suitable for all A-Level Biology specifications but was originally designed for Edexcel Biology B specifications. Lesson explains the role of nerve cells and relates structure to function. Uses McGraw animations and annotated graphs to go over what happens during an action potential.

Edexcel Biology B – Topic 8 – Origins of Genetic Information - L2 Monohybrid and Dihybrid Crosses Full 50 minute lesson on Monohybrid and Dihybrid cross. Suitable for all A-level specifications but was originally made for the New Edexcel Biology B Specification. Includes details of how to construct simple to complex punnet squares and also goes into the details of Mendel's 9:3:3:1 ratio and his original pea plant experiments.

Short lesson which outlines the importance of Surface to Volume ratio. Includes short video clip and worksheet where students perform some simple calculations. Suitable for most A level Biology specifications.

Full lesson which outlines the pathogenesis of Staph. bacteria, the influenza virus and tuberculosis. Contains a case study of Staph. species and a TB card sort. Suitable for all A level biology specifications but aimed at Edexcel Biology B - Topic 6.

Planning sheet to be printed on A3 paper, you then walk through each question using the Powerpoint, students make simple notes and then attempt to answer each question. This is to be used with the C2 Edexcel Specimen Paper available on the Edexcel website.

Full A-Level Biology lesson. Suitable for all A-Level Biology specifications but was originally designed for Edexcel Biology B specifications. Lesson explains hormonal control in mammals. It covers the key differences between peptide hormones and steroids hormones. The lesson uses the example of Oestrogen and Adrenaline and covers their mode of action.

50 minute lesson designed for new BTEC Applied Science Level 3 (New Specification). Lesson covers the first few learning points of Unit 1 - Principles and Applications of Science - Physics - C2 Waves in Communication. Lesson outlines the term Refraction, summarises some basic GCSE Physics content and then uses a few sample exam questions to check understanding and encourages students to use equations they are given in the external exam.
