Theseus and the Minotaur / The Reaping

A handout with the story of Theseus and the minotaur, with some questions aimed at Year 7 students using P.E.E (point, evidence, explain), and a handout with an extract from ‘The Hunger Games’ called ‘The Reaping’ so that students can discuss how Suzanne Collins used Theseus and the minotaur to inspire her novel. You could then ask them to adapt other myths into a modern context as a creative writing task.

Group oracy: which film pitch to invest in?

I used this with a MAT Year 7 group who had been looking at extracts from Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island throughout the term. As a group oracy task, they had to read the film pitches for both stories and then discuss which one to invest in, imagining they worked for a film production company. They really enjoyed the task and it allowed them to use a wide vocabulary when discussing the advantages of each story.

Lynch mobs: context- To Kill a Mockingbird

This PowerPoint contains extracts from websites with details of contextual significance to To Kill a Mockingbird, explaining why lynch mobs were common in relation to sexual crimes in the South. It also contains extracts from the text and Chapter 15, where the potential lynch mob arrive at Maycomb jail, for analysis of the Gothic parody and the increase in tension.

Plastic pollution summary & persuasive writing

These are resources I created for my Year7 class to teach them how to summarise and then give them a scaffolded persuasive ‘real life’ writing task of writing a letter to a soft drink company to persuade them to support the Deposit Return Scheme of plastic bottles. There is an article about companies lobbying the Government to delay the DRS which students summarise in sections.

North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell AS Level resources

I’m preparing to teach North and South for the first time and creating podcasts and study vlogs which hopefully students will find useful. The podcast series has chapter-by-chapter commentaries and a few topical podcasts about the Victorian era and Margaret as a subversive heroine. https://sophietoovey.podbean.com/ The study vlog starts by looking at Patsy Stoneman’s feminist reading of the novel, looking at the intersection of class and gender. I’ve also uploaded a document about the Victorian crisis of faith (to accompany the podcast) and a compilation of past paper questions with mark scheme comments from the chief examiner.

Study Vlog how to read a poem

This study vlog works through a strategy for how to read a poem to give students tools for independent study. It uses Owen Sheers’ poem ‘The Hill Fort’ as a model example.
