Unit 7 Contemporary Issues in Science Q1

(0)
A lesson aimed at BTEC Level 3 Applied Science students preparing for their Unit 7 exam. This lesson introduces the first of five long answer questions through a variety of activities: organising terms into the four implication categories (social, economic, environmental, ethical) finding implications in a real exam article, with scaffolding to help evidence this opportunity to see past student answers and discuss why they placed in particular grade bands Please note: You will need to download the Unit 7 June 2019 paper to access whole articles. I cannot reproduce them here fully for copyright reasons.

Cystic fibrosis
dzielinska1dzielinska1

Cystic fibrosis

(0)
A full lesson on cystic fibrosis, focusing on the regulation of water content in mucus of healthy lungs and lungs of a person with cystic fibrosis, as well as the effect of the disease on the respiratory, digestive and reproductive system. Exam questions and assessment techniques are included within the PowerPoint. Specification: Edexcel Biology A (Salters Nuffield)
Plant nutrition
dzielinska1dzielinska1

Plant nutrition

(0)
Cards that can be printed, laminated and used for a speed dating activity. Have students memorise their nutrient and meet with other students to find out information on other nutrients. Contains 12 cards (first 6 on macronutrients, last 6 on micronutrients). Specification: BTEC Applied Science - Unit 24 (Principles of Plant and Soil Science)

Plant cell specialisation

(0)
A Key Stage 5 lesson on palisade mesophyll and root hair cells. Aimed at BTEC NQF Level 3 Applied Science students in preparation for Unit 1 (exam unit). Contains a taboo style starter on cell organelles a variety of student led activities (annotating diagrams, marking past student exam answers, an exam question, a comparison table)
Tissues and organs
dzielinska1dzielinska1

Tissues and organs

(0)
A key stage 5 lesson on Tissues and Organs. Originally designed for a BTEC Applied Science group with an interest in forensics. Includes activities for learners to complete. The lesson covers: muscle tissue epithelial tissue connective tissue nervous tissue organs
Ethics in genetics
dzielinska1dzielinska1

Ethics in genetics

(0)
A short lesson on ethics for AS Biology (Edexcel A). Works best with the relevant textbook as it allows learners to read about the four ethical frameworks first, although this can also be done through research. The activities are separating statements based on the ethics framework they belong to, and and each framework to analyse a case study of a couple pregnant with a baby suffering from Tay-Sachs disease.
Blood vessels

A lesson on the structure of arteries, capillaries and veins for AS Biology (Edexcel A). Includes diagrams to label, a summary table and exam questions.
Enzymes
dzielinska1dzielinska1

Enzymes

(0)
A lesson for AS Biology (Edexcel A). Activities include unscrambling correct definitions, filling out a table on enzymes (as seen in the cover image), exam questions and annotating graphs on the factors affecting enzymes.

BTEC NQF Applied Science Unit 7 Intro

(0)
An introduction into the Unit where learners have a chance to define key terms, look at the strengths and weaknesses of methods of communicating scientific information and different target audiences (scientific community, general public pressure groups and political representatives). This lesson begins with section C of the unit, as I think article analysis will be easier if students have knowledge on science reporting first.

Content includes: introduction to unit structure and function of epithelial tissues recognising cancerous cells and tissues different types of screening (biopsy, aspirates) the process of microtomy ensuring quality standards The lesson contains mostly student-led activities, however the content is provided on slides if you do not have access to the Edexcel Salters Nuffield A Biology book, or the Biological Review article on ‘Preparing Microscope Slides’. I have added some ideas in the notes of certain slides.
