Percentages Year 5/6 school/home tutoring

(0)
PowerPoint, PDF and WORD doc for complete unit for Percentage of a number. Includes ‘How to’ methods with differentiated worksheets and differentated word problems for school/home/online tutoring. It comes complete with modelling examples and differentiated worksheets. By teaching all of the methods it reinforces the connection between fractions, decimals and percentages, leading to a deeper understanding, ‘number-nimbleness’ and mastery in keeping with the National Curriculum guidelines. Starting with the ‘How to Calculate’ methods. The first lesson, method 1 (turns both percentage and number of interest into fractions) is modelled with only completing the first half of the worksheet columns (workings and fraction answers); Lesson 2 models method 2 (a quick shortcut for speed in tests and SATs) with the completion of the same columns. Then the final two columns (workings and decimal) are to be completed with the third method (turning the percentage into a decimal and multiplying it by the number of interest). These are followed by the word problems. There is a model for each method. The children can be divided into groups dependent on their preferred calculation method and the relevant method can be modelled with the example question. It could be carried out like a ‘round robin’, where they move to another method, but it is not necessary. National curriculum Guidelines for Year 6 • recognise the per cent symbol (%) and understand that per cent relates to ‘number of parts per 100’, and write percentages as a fraction with denominator 100, and as a decimal fraction • solve problems which require knowing percentage and decimal equivalents

Year 3 Spelling Story

(0)
After learning, using spelling techniques or methods that suit, check the spelling of Year 3 words from the National Curriculum using the story PowerPoint, ‘The Mysterious Door’ that has to have the spelling words added. This technique adds context to the words, allowing the children to identify certain homophone spellings with meanings.
