I have several years of experience with working with underachieving pupils at KS3 level. I am a qualified scondary maths teacher. There are very few good resources for children who have little concrete learning of maths and I have made several resources which have helped to build childrens confidence in maths. The sheets are designed to give pupils the experience of working independently and the feeling of achieveing something which is a difficult topic such as percentages or algebra.

Solving two step equations.

The equations are designed to work with small numbers and to build students confidence with methods rather than big numbers. There is space for the working out so ideally the sheet can be glued into pupils books.

Expanding brackets in algebra easy

The worksheet is in three parts of difficulty in order to give pupils the confidence to expand brackets. The sheet doesnt have any squares which allows the pupils to build confidence with setting out termsd and practising mulitplication. The first part is to ensure that pupils are confident in the way the expression is to be written out and taking care of the addition or subtraction signs. When this is marked, pupils can move on to the second stage. The students further practise multiplication and there is a third term in the expression. The final part of the sheet is where pupils ahve to add two sets of brackets added together. By this stage the teacher has given enough support to be able to give the pupil the skills to expand brackets with confidence.

Pupils can practise working out 50%, 25% and 75%. Then the task is differentiated as the pupils progress down the sheet. The sheet is designed so pupils work independently and can follow a pattern when checking solutions. Pupils also find 10% of whole amounts so they are using decimal numbers. The plenary can be to discuss the methods of finding 100% knowing the value of 10%.

Collecting like terms and substitution

Pupils can practise collecting like terms and then use fluency to then substitute numbers into expressions. There is a table to show working out and the questions are to check pupils understanding of algebraic expressions and to check their multiplication skills. Pupils may have grasped the idea of collecting like terms and can move onto the substitution part. This sheet is a chance for the less able to show progress.

This sheet allows pupils to build confidence with simple percentages but enables the pupils who have the confidence to move onto finding 1% of any whole amount. The pupils are taught to set out their findings in a table so the work is neatly presented and patterns can then be found in the methods. The sheet is a tool which can also be used as homework or peer work in the classroom. Pupils can spot errors quickly in the table form and is designed to be used with weaker pupils who will feel a sense of achievement when completing the sheet.
